The lymphatic system is a network of tissues and organs, comprised of lymph vessels, lymph nodes, bone marrow, thymus and lymph. Lymph vessels carry lymph fluid throughout the animal body and contain white blood cells which defend against germs. Lymph nodes support white blood cells which also fight infection and help cleanse and detoxify the animal body.

The spleen is a long, flat organ that resides in the abdomen along the outer edges of the stomach. The spleen is the largest filter and blood cleanser in the body.

Splenomegaly is a spleen disorder referring to an enlarged spleen. Spleen disorders can occur in all breeds and genders of dogs and cats, but largely affects middle-aged dogs and large breed dogs.  Spleen disorders are usually not directly related to the spleen but an underlying symptom of another disease or condition.

In addition to imaging, blood work will give a comprehensive review of all possible underlying medical issues.

Recommended treatment will be dependent upon the underlying causes of the enlarged spleen and many of the underlying conditions may be treated with medication. As an enlarged spleen is typically a sign of another underlying medical condition.  In severe cases, removal of the spleen (splenectomy) may be recommended.
