The heart is at the center of the cardiovascular system providing nutritional support to the cardiovascular system and other organs including the liver, kidneys, and digestive system, supporting optimal cardiac function and muscle cell healing and regeneration.

Our curious pets have natural hunting instincts, and as result, it’s not surprising they cross paths with a snake. As the weather warms, snakes come out of hibernation, and summertime is when most snake bites occur. Snake bites tend to occur on an animal’s head or neck. Bites involving the trunk of the body have a poorer prognosis.

Snake bites are a fact of life for dogs and some cats. Of the over 8,000 venomous bites reported annually, on average only 12 are fatal. Snake bites may affect one or more body systems including the cardiopulmonary system, the nervous system, or the coagulation system. Pain, swelling and bruising at the bite side will be minimal, if the snake is not poisonous or the venom was not injected.

Signs and symptoms of snake bite:

One, two or several puncture wounds

Immediate and painful swelling at bite site

Tissue necrosis

Cell Death

Diminished function

Damage to blood vessel lining

Clotting defects

Localized tissue destruction

Loss of limb

Severe snake bite signs include:

Muscle tremors

Neurological damage such as depressed respiration

In case your pet is bitten by a snake, you should seek immediate veterinary attention. Restrict movement of your pet and loosely immobilize the limb if bitten on an extremity. Do not incise the bite wound to aspirate the venom, suck out the venom, do not apply a tourniquet and not apply ice without a veterinary assistance.

The odds are in favor that your pet will make a complete recovery. The degree of damage is determined by a wide variety of variables, including the age, species of snake, the intensity and depth of the fang penetration, the amount of venom injected the location of the bite, and the size of the bitten animal. Remember the snake’s appearance, including color, shape and size of the snake.

Conventional Remedies:

Take your pet immediately to a vet. Do not attempt to remove venom by knife, suck the venom or try to kill the snake. Try to identify the snake by its size, color patterns and presence or absence of a tail.

Identify your pet for fang/puncture marks. If bitten on a leg, wrap a constricting band on the affected limb just above the bite wound. The band should be tight but not excessively tight. Compression around the limb will slow the spread of the venom.

All snake bite victims should be observed for a minimum of 12-24 hours even when there are no clinical signs. If clinical signs are present the length of observation is increased to 48-72 hours as damage to organs may not appear immediately.

Your vet may administer anti-venin, which is a serum that is commercially produced to neutralize the effects of the injected venom. A specific antibody is produced for each type of snake.
