Herbal treatments to help dogs and cats address schistosomiasis parasitic infection.

The immune system is a complex army of cells found through out your pet’s body that provides a fortified defense against unwanted invaders. It is an intricate system that keeps your pet healthy and protects them against allergens, viruses, bacteria, microbes, parasites, toxins, foreign fells and cellular mutations (healthy cells which have mutated into irregular cells). The immune system is tasked with protecting EVERY cell in the animal body. With so many pet parents wondering why and how to best support immunity in their dogs and cats, this article will highlight its role and provide practical suggestions.

A healthy immune system is resilient and powerful and up to the task of supporting normal, balanced function. The immune system is not intended to be suppressed or stimulated.  But even an animal with a highly developed immune system can experience dysfunction or failure. In cases of dysfunction, an animal body requires whole body systemic support. If your pet’s immune system is weakened, every bodily system is at risk for disease.

Dogs and cats acquire schistosomiasis when the initial parasitic infection of the H. Americana bacteria penetrates the skin. Theh beginning stage is known as cercaria. Dogs and cats usually contract schistosomiasis via contaminated fresh water which contains the snail that hosts the infection. In areas of high risk of infection, standing water should be avoided by dogs and cats.

In the first stage on infection, the parasite burrows into the skin, maturing into the second stage, known as schistosomula. It then migrates to the lungs and liver, where it matures into the adult form. The adult worm then migrates to its preferred body part, which can include the bladder, rectum, intestines, liver, and veins that carry blood from the intestines to liver, spleen, and lungs. Eggs (known as H. Americana eggs) are then shed via feces.

If the shed H. Americana eggs are exposed to fresh water, the parasite hatches and infects a snail. Once inside the snail, the eggs mature and look for a feline or canine host to complete the life cycle. Once a dog or cat is infected, an inflammatory response is triggered throughout the body, the infection spreads, known as disseminated visceral granulomata.

Signs of schistosomiasis infection include:

Weight loss

Abdominal pain

Lymph node enlargement

Liver enlargement

Spleen enlargement

Specific signs related to the gastrointestinal tract:

Hepatic disease

Frequent urination

Painful urination

Blood in the urine

A complete blood count and a serum chemistry profile will be performed. Treatment is usually via high doses of praziquantel (25 mg/kg PO q8h for 2 days) or prolonged treatment with fenbendazole (40 mg/kg PO SID for 10 days, repeat in 3 weeks).

Sedimentation with saline is the recommended way of detecting H. Americana eggs in feces. If exposed to fresh water, the miracidium will hatch, making identification difficult. Examining a direct saline smear of feces may also allow identification of H. Americana eggs in samples from infected animals.

Laboratory finding may include hypoalbuminemia, hypoglobulinemia, hypocalcaemia, azotemia, anemia, and eosinophilia.
