Prostatitis in Dogs and Cats

Prostatitis in Dogs and Cats

Herbal nutrition for dogs and cats to help address an enlarged prostate glands and prostatitis infections.

The endocrine system interacts with many organs and bodily systems, and the adrenal and thyroid glands plays a major role in providing critical trace nutrient support to all glands and tissue, and the adrenals can become stressed and fatigued, also affecting the liver, duodenum, kidneys and reproductive system.

Our pet’s bodies are comprised of a complicated yet interdependent set of systems. Like humans, one organ and system affects another. Attention must be given to whole body support when treating dysfunction or disease in the kidneys, liver, and bladder, digestive, reproductive or urinary tract. Whole food nutrients and plant and marine botanicals can restore imbalance and rehabilitation to the digestive, renal, hepatic, metabolic, endocrine, and urinary systems.

The prostate gland is found in male pets only. It is small, consists of two lobes and lies just behind the bladder, surrounding the urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the penis and out of the body) and below the rectum.

Its function is to produce prostatic fluids that provide nourishment for sperm cells to the penis during breeding. The prostate begins to develop before your pet reaches puberty. By the age of two years old, the prostate gland reaches its maximum size.

An enlarged prostate can occur for several reasons, including:

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)

Prostatisis (bacterial infection of prostate gland)

Cystic hyperplasia

Para prostatic cysts

Squamous metaplasia (enlargement of the prostate gland caused by excess esstrogen)

Prostatic abscess (a severe form of prostatitis which includes infected fluid within the prostate)

Prostatic neoplasia (tumors of the prostate gland)

When a male pet is neutered most of the prostate gland is removed and as a result prostate problems seldom occur. Enlarged prostates often affect older male animals who have not been neutered (intact). As an intact dog or cat ages, their hormone levels change (both testosterone and estrogen) and cause prostate swelling. An enlarged prostate gland can cause severe discomfort and pain, and makes urinating and defecating for your pet very difficult.

Helpful suggestions in maintaining prostate health in your dogs and cats:

Neuter your pet in the first year to help control prostate problems

Make sure your pet gets frequent bathroom breaks to relieve discomfort and prevent urinary tract infections. An animal with an enlarged prostate gland may not be able to urinate completely (void the bladder)

Encourage your pet to drink more water so that he can urinate more often

Do not over exercise pets with prostate problems as it can worsen symptoms and cause prostate pain
