Natura Petz Organics supplements for neuromuscular disorders in dogs and cats

Animals routinely experience irregularities in bodily systems, including the Central, Autonomic, Somatic and Parasympathetic Nervous systems, requiring a nutritional correction to restore emotional balance, to promote relaxation and reduce nervousness and to balance mood and provide feelings of comfort and security.

The nervous system is divided into the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and the peripheral nervous system, (the neuromuscular system comprised of nerves and muscles.) The neuromuscular system consists of the nerves leaving the back of the brain, transmitting messages to the muscles and glands and limbs.

The neuromuscular system is an essential part of any motor activity which includes standing up, walking, running, taking food, chewing or swallowing. Any voluntary motor activity is initiated by the brain that sends command signals down the spinal cord to stimulate a peripheral nerve.

Each muscle of the body is controlled by its own peripheral nerve. Signals travel along nerves like an electrical current. When the electrical nerve impulse reaches the end of the nerve, the signal must be conveyed across the gap between the nerve and the muscle called the neuromuscular junction. A chemical messenger bridges this gap and is released from the end of the nerve, flowing across the gap and affixes itself to a receptor on the muscle, causing muscle contraction and motor activity.

Neuromuscular disease is a very broad term that encompasses many diseases which directly or indirectly impair the functioning of the muscles and the nervous system tasking with their functions. Typically, neuromuscular problems cause either spasticity with muscles permanently receiving commands to tighten and contract; or a degree of paralysis, depending on the location and the nature of the problem

Dogs or cats with neuromuscular disorder present with varying degree of muscle weakness and muscle wastage. This muscle weakness can affect the limbs so that animals are unable to stand or exercise normally but can also affect other muscles in the body. The muscles of the pharynx or the esophagus are weak in some type of neuromuscular disorder, creating problems in swallowing or causing regurgitation.

Muscle weakness can be caused by a failure of the electrical nerve impulse to be conveyed by the nerve, failure of the chemical messenger to bridge the gap between the nerve and the muscle (junctionopathy) or failure of the muscle to contract (myopathy).

In its mildest form, muscle weakness may only be intermittent and triggered by exercise. This weakness might affect all four legs or only affect the hind legs. It is typically accompanied with a short stride, a stiff gait and muscle tremors.

In the most severe forms, neuromuscular disorders can cause the animal to be completely paralyzed, unable to support its own weight, unable to hold its head up and have breathing difficulty due to involvement of the muscles of the chest wall and diaphragm.

A large number of diseases can affect the neuromuscular system and are divided by the components of the neuromuscular system, including the peripheral nerves, neuromuscular junction or muscle as well as diseases somewhere else in the body.

Diseases affecting directly the various component of the neuromuscular system consist of infectious diseases:

Toxoplasmosis

Neosporosis

Botulism

Tetanus

Immune-diseases causing inflammation of the muscle (myositis) includes: Inflammation of the nerve (neuritis or polyradiculoneuritis)

Destruction of the acetylcholine receptor on the muscle (myasthenia gravis), Toxic diseases

Inherited diseases

Degenerative diseases. Diseases of other sources that affect the neuromuscular system include: Hormonal diseases (under-active thyroid gland, diabetes, Cushing's disease, Addison's disease)

Cancer (causing low sugar level or release of chemical toxic for the neuromuscular system)

Kidney disease (causing abnormal salt balance essential for proper muscle function)

Heart disease

Lung disease

A CSF analysis (cerebrospinal fluid test) may be conducted but requires anesthesia and has significant risks.

Myelographyis atechnique which consists of injecting a dye into the fluid that surrounds the spinal cord and then taking an X-ray.
