Animals routinely experience dysfunction in their body systems, including the Central, Autonomic, Somatic and Parasympathetic Nervous systems, requiring a nutritional correction to help address body system imbalance, to help restore emotional balance, to help promote relaxation and reduce nervousness, to help balance mood and to help provide feelings of comfort and security.

Unlike the central nervous system, which is protected by vertebrae in the spine and bones in the skull, peripheral nerves are more exposed and less protected by anything your pet comes into contact. As a result, peripheral nerves are susceptible to physical injury and damages via toxins, pathogens, infections, etc.

Peripheral nerves are located throughout the animal body and are comprised of motor, sensory, autonomic, and cranial nerves. Peripheral nerves are responsible for conscious, coordinated movement (somatic); for automatic physical responses (autonomic), and for the movement of the digestive system (enteric).

Neuralgia is a disease of the nervous system that results in acute (sudden) and chronic pain. It is commonly associated with intense, intermittent pain along the course of a nerve, especially in the head or face.

Neuralgia affects dogs more than cats and is difficult to diagnose. Wounds, contusions, fractures, diseases of the nervous system, tumors, enlarged glands and other injuries are often related to neuralgia.

Trigeminal neuralgia affects the trigeminal nerve, which is responsible for helping your dog use the muscles in his face. Dogs with trigeminal neuralgia often have trouble blinking their eyes, opening and closing their mouths and eating and drinking. Trigeminal neuralgia is usually not permanent.

Trigeminal neuralgia typically occurs due to injury or inflammation of the trigeminal nerve. Bone deformities, tumors and injuries can cause trigeminal neuralgia in dogs but often, it presents as a result of an underlying condition. When the cause of trigeminal neuralgia is obvious, it is referred to as idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia.

The primary symptom of trigeminal neuralgia is your pet’s inability to open and close its mouth. Your pet's lower jaw may begin to dangle limply and may lose the ability to blink his eyes. In most cases, dogs don't experience total paralysis of the facial muscles, especially not in the initial stages of the disease.

Cats typically experience neuralgia in the form of Facial Pain Syndrome or (FOPS). FOPS is associated with exaggerated licking and chewing motions, pawing at the mouth. FOPS can be brought on by injury or trauma to the oral cavity, especially the tongue and face, or can be related to the presence of a foreign object in your cat’s mouth, face or neck. This is an extremely painful condition but your cat’s discomfort is normally confined to the oral cavity and lips.

If your dog or cat suffers from neuralgia, there are things you can do to reduce their discomfort:

Feed, soft moist food that is easy to chew

Raise their water and food bowls for easier reach

Use a water bottle to administer water if your pet has trouble drinking

Conventional Remedies:

Your pet will need to have your pet see a veterinary neurologist for a diagnosis.  A physical examination, MRI and other comprehensive tests may be ordered to rule out the possibility that underlying conditions might have caused you dog's neuralgia.

Typically, symptoms of trigeminal neuralgia disappear once the damage or trauma to the trigeminal nerve has healed, with most pets experiencing symptoms for 2-3 weeks. Your vet will likely prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs, including steroids, to treat inflammation of the trigeminal nerve. You may also want to consider natural supplements to help address nerve pain and inflammation, which have limited, if any, side effects.

Your pet will need some help to eat and drink while recovering from any form of neuralgia. Most pets retain some control over the muscles of the face and jaw, but you'll still need to assist them due to the disabling aspects of this condition.

If your pet doesn't recover from trigeminal neuralgia, the facial muscles could atrophy over time from lack of use. It will result in lack of ability to eat and drink and more intensive supportive therapy may be required, including feeding by hand and injecting fluids.
