Muscles Aches

Muscle AchesSupplements to help relieve muscle aches in dogs & cats.

Herbal remedies to reduce pain and address painful situations for dogs and cats.

Nutrition plays a major role in skin and bone health. Healthy skin and bones are a result of a well-functioning, synchronized effort by the immune system, tissues and organs in the body and provide natural antibiotics, proteins, co-enzymes and trace minerals that support skin and the skin’s ability to withstand and repair the effects of topical skin wounds, scars, burns, environmental exposure to toxins, antigens and microorganisms, bacterial and viral.

Pain is an unpleasant sensory or emotional experience. Since animals can’t explain their pain, people have long assumed that pets don’t experience pain to the same extent as people. Although general anesthesia keeps them immobile and oblivious to any pain during surgery, pets have historically been under-treated for pain.

Caring for an animal with an injury is no small matter. A small injury can quickly become infected and lead to long-term injury or disability. Because an injury or wound is likely to result in pain for your animal, they may react by not wanting you near them.  If your dog or cat is growling or hissing at you, don’t let it stop you from seeking medical attention for their injuries, wounds or pain.

As in humans, damaged tissue and muscles releases chemicals that sensitize nerve endings. Response to pain travels through the central nervous system up the spinal cord to the cortex of the brain, where pain registers and triggers a protective reflex, known as “learned avoidance.” Learned avoidance teaches pets to avoid repeating the situation attached to pain as well as to protect itself or rest until an injury heals.

Not all aches or pains are severe or sudden and can be managed with natural elements. While antibiotics and steroids are used heavily to reduce inflammation or manage pain, chronic pain can also be relieved with a heat lamp, for pain related to joint pain or arthritis while cold water baths can soothe and reduce symptoms related to an allergy; both which are natural analgesics, or pain relievers. Herbal pain relievers are also available and are safe for dogs and cats alike.

In cases of extreme pain or chronic aching, such as with arthritis, stress is placed on the immune system, which can reduce immunity, interfere with blood clotting, wound healing and compromise the cardiovascular system.

Extreme aches and pain can also permanently alter neural pathways, creating a neurological memory in your dog or cat, causing the pain to continue long after the injury has healed. Chronic neuropathic pain is extremely difficult to manage for a dog or cat, is also difficult to treat medically and creates a host of other neurological responses, such as neuropathy, or decreased blood flow to the affected area. In severe, never related cases, an anesthesiologist can administer a nerve block into the spinal cord to prevent the pain message from ever reaching the brain.

Pets are susceptible to muscle and joint conditions such as swollen joints. Swollen joints can cause intense discomfort and pain, especially during colder seasons. Dogs and cats are both affected, although larger dog breeds such as German Shepherds, Labradors and Golden Retrievers are more prone to swollen joints.

Age, wear and tear of the joints over time as well as being overweight can also lead to joint swelling. Swelling of the joints is often associated with muscle and joint problems such as tenderness, warmth, redness, inflammation, stiffness and pain. It is most likely a sign of arthritis, a gradual degenerative joint disease.

Stiffness of the muscles and joints is a common problem, especially in elderly pets. Pet owners often notice there pet is feeling stiff or struggling with joint aches when they walk with a stiff gait or limp, become less active or struggle to get up.

Cold mornings after long periods of rest are often the most difficult for pets with joint or muscle problems and it can take some time for your pet to get going during these mornings.

If you notice any swelling of your pet’s limbs, consult your vet immediately and take preventative measures so more serious health complications do not develop.

As a pet owner, you can ensure that your pet maintains a healthy weight, eats a well balanced, premium diet to boost the immune system and encourage gentle exercise such as walking and swimming.

Taking preventative measures and making certain lifestyle changes such as weight loss, proper nutrition, regular exercise and adding natural supplements can make a significant difference to your pet’s health. A more holistic approach that includes acupuncture, chiropractic therapy or massage can also reduce your pet’s symptoms and improve overall wellness.

Cats and dogs have very elastic skin with a fair amount of fatty tissue between the skin and the underlying muscle. In cats, the problem of bacterial growth is especially prevalent because the skin heals too quickly over a puncture, trapping the bacteria under the skin. Once this occurs, drainage and removal of necrotic (damaged and rotten) tissue is performed.
