Molloscum Contagiosum in Dogs and Cats

Molluscum contagiosumPet remedies to help treat skin infections on dogs and cats.

Herbal remedies to help address symptoms of skin infections such as molluscum contagiosum on dogs and cats.

The immune system is a complex array of cells that are found throughout your pet’s body. Immune cells are designed to function in conjunction with one another as well as other organs and body systems to help provide a fortified defense against unwanted invaders. It is an intricate system that keeps your pet healthy and protects them against all sorts of invaders including allergens, viruses, bacteria, microbes, parasites and toxins.

The immune system is tasked to support balanced function and is not intended to be suppressed or stimulated. In cases of dysfunction, an animal’s body requires whole body systemic support. If your pet’s immune system is weakened, every body system is at risk.

Molluscum contagiosum is a skin infection that causes small pearly or flesh-colored bumps. The infection is caused by a virus and is highly contagious. In animals, it is typically contracted via exposure to pigeons, chickens, dogs and horses that have become infected.

The bumps are round, usually clear and with a dimple in the center. They are a little smaller in size than a pencil eraser. The bumps are not usually painful and may appear alone or in clusters. They most often appear on the trunk, face, eyelids, or genital area. The bumps may become inflamed and turn red as your pet’s body fights the virus.

Animals with a weakened immune system are at risk and may present dozens of bumps that require special treatment.

The virus commonly spreads through skin-to-skin contact or contact with an infected surface or environment. The infection is contagious until the bumps are gone. The time from exposure to the virus until the bumps appear usually is 2 to 7 weeks, but it can take up to 6 months.

To prevent molluscum contagiosum from spreading:

Try to prevent your pet from scratching such as an E collar to limit access

Cover affected area with tape or a bandage

Do not share bedding or other material

Separate and restrict access for other pets
