Laryngitis in Dogs and Cats

Herbal nutrition to help reduce symptoms related to laryngitis and to help suppress coughing, wheezing and gagging in cats or dogs.

The immune system is a complex army of cells found through out your pet’s body that provides a fortified defense against unwanted invaders. It is an intricate system that keeps your pet healthy and protects them against allergens, viruses, bacteria, microbes, parasites, toxins, foreign fells and cellular mutations (healthy cells which have mutated into irregular cells). The immune system is tasked with protecting EVERY cell in the animal body.

A healthy immune system is resilient and powerful and up to the task of supporting normal, balanced function. The immune system is not intended to be suppressed or stimulated.  But even an animal with a highly developed immune system can experience dysfunction or failure. In cases of dysfunction, an animal body requires whole body systemic support. If your pet’s immune system is weakened, every bodily system is at risk for disease.

When your cat or dog’s voice gets hoarse or raspy, or disappears completely, it could be an indication of laryngitis. Laryngitis is due to inflammation of the mucous membranes of the larynx, often caused by excessive meowing, coughing, barking or infection, all of which can cause vocal cord strain. Signs of laryngitis include hoarseness and loss of voice.

Laryngitis can often be the result of a bacterial infection. Upper respiratory infections in cats can trigger sneezing, congestion, coughing and rapid, open mouthed breathing.

Laryngitis can be associated with tonsillitis, throat infections, tracheobronchitis, pneumonia, inhalant allergies, with a persistent cough related to allergies or asthma, and less commonly, with tumors in the throat. The lining of the larynx collects mucus and when your pet is unable to clear the build up, exaggerated attempts to clear their throat further irritates the larynx and lowers resistance to infection.

If your pet is barking or meowing repeatedly, try removing the anxiety or stress triggers that is causing the behavior. Natural remedies can help lessen throat irritation and infection, and a calming supplement can help disengage stress, anxiety and behavior triggers associated with persistent barking and meowing. If your pet's condition persists, seek veterinary care as soon as possible as it may be a sign of a more serious health issue.

If the problem is due to prolonged coughing, seek veterinary attention to investigate and eliminate the cause of the chronic cough. If laryngitis is confirmed, pprescribed antibiotics will usually cure the infection.

Limit dry food and use holistic, wet food when your dog or cat is recovering from laryngitis, as it may irritate inflamed tissue. Feed wet food, or add water to her dry food to soften it before your dog or cat eats. Make sure your pet has plenty of cold water to help ease the swelling in her throat.
