Kidneys

Herbal treatments for canines and felines to help reduce kidney disease problems in cats and dogs.

In renal challenges, the kidneys not only need to be supported and rehabilitated but consideration should also be given to support of the liver, cardiovascular system and autonomic nervous system.

The endocrine system interacts with many organs and bodily systems, and the adrenal and thyroid glands plays a major role in providing critical trace nutrient support to all glands and tissue, and the adrenals can become stressed and fatigued, also affecting the liver, duodenum, and kidneys.

The kidneys filter out and excrete toxins from the body through the urine. Healthy kidneys conserve water and concentrate toxins into a smaller amount of liquid to be urinated away. The kidneys have a very large reserve capacity, and symptoms of failure are not seen until approximately 75% of kidney tissue is nonfunctional.

When the kidneys are damaged, they become less able to concentrate the urine. Because your pet is losing water in the urine, he or she needs to drink more. As they continue to drink more, they urinate more, creating the first and most noticeable symptoms of drinking more and urinating more.

Kidney disease, also known as renal disease frequently affects both cats and dogs. The kidneys have a very important function within the body which is to filter the blood and remove waste products. If these organs do not function properly, waste products accumulate in the body causing your pet to become very ill.

There are two forms of kidney disease, acute renal disease and chronic renal disease. In acute renal disease, symptoms occur suddenly and are often a result of toxicity, infections and changes in the body that restrict the blood supply to the kidneys. Acute renal disease is sudden and severe.

Chronic renal disease (CRD) occurs gradually and over a longer period and there may not be any observable signs of illness. If left untreated, kidney failure can occur and result in serious health complications for your pet.

Conventional Remedies:

The diagnosis of kidney disease is based on the symptoms, thorough physical examination and review of your pet’s medical history. As the kidneys lose function, other signs of Chronic Renal Failure (CRF) may occur, such as weight loss, nausea, constipation, low energy, fatigue, and poor appetite. A blood test and urinalysis should be done if you notice these symptoms, as there are many conditions that can cause them. A blood test and urinalysis are necessary to accurately diagnose CRF.

Certain diagnostic tests such as blood tests, urinalysis, x-rays and ultrasonography may be performed to determine the cause of kidney disease.

Your vet will prescribe various medications to reduce the workload on the kidneys. Certain dietary changes such as a low protein, sodium and phosphorus diet including drinking plenty of fresh, clean water will be recommended.

In more severe cases, hospitalization may be required where intravenous fluids, medications and nutritional support will be administered. Kidney dialysis and kidney transplants may also be performed on cats and dogs, but keep in mind that these treatments are extremely costly.
