Intestinal Support

Herbal remedies to help support intestinal health in dogs and cats.

A healthy digestive tract is critical to overall health and well-being. The digestive health of an animal can impact not only the breakdown and absorption of nutrients, but can also have a significant impact on other body systems including the immune system, the liver, bone marrow and the adrenals, which are part of the endocrine system.

As with humans, intestinal health in dogs and cats is difficult to maintain and diagnose. Digestive dysfunction can result in abdominal cramping and pain in animals. Like humans, abdominal discomfort may be caused by an accumulation of gas in the abdomen and can be extremely painful.  Dogs and cats of all ages and breeds may be affected by abdominal pain, although some breeds are likely at greater risk than others.

Digestive dysfunction can occur for a variety of reasons, but the main causes tend to be related to being fed table scraps, foods that are sweet, sugary or fatty, or foods that contain corn, wheat or soy. If a new food is introduced too quickly into the diet, it can also cause digestive upset.

Our pets are also often subject to the harmful effects of processed foods which contain preservatives and additives. Animals are also exposed to environmental pollutants and the stress of modern living, which can all affect digestive functioning and can result in a number of digestive upsets.

One of the biggest culprits related to digestive upset are commercial canned and dry foods that are often promoted as “natural” or “healthy.” Often, grocery store and big box chain stores offer foods full of grains, meat by-products and chemical and preservatives additives that wreak havoc on the animal body.

Digestive upset may also be related to your pet eating garbage, spoiled food, road kill or ingesting toxins such as garden chemicals, pesticides, fertilizers, bleach or household detergents. In the case of suspected toxin ingestion, this is an emergency situation and you must contact your vet immediately.

Some pets and breeds may also naturally have more sensitive stomachs and digestive systems, and may be prone to a number of digestive problems such as stomach inflammation, frequent vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, constipation, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and bloating.

Chronic and acute digestive upsets are unpleasant for both you and your pet because they are difficult to diagnose and treat, leaving both pets and pet owners feeling helpless and uncomfortable.

Make sure your pet has plenty of fresh clean water available at all times. Many cats are fussy water drinkers and may only drink from water sources other than their water bowel, such as from running taps, baths, or your drinking glass. Keep at least two sources of water around for your pet.

Food and water bowels should be made from glass, ceramics or stainless steel, and not plastic. Plastic is porous and can harbor bacteria. Bowels should also be washed regularly with hot water.
