Impacted Anal Glands in Dogs and Cats

Impacted Anal Glands in Dogs and Cats

Herbal remedies to help clean impacted anal glands and to help support anal gland health in cats and dogs.

A healthy digestive tract is critical to overall health and well-being. The digestive health of an animal can impact not only breakdown and absorption of nutrients, but can also have a significant impact on other body systems including the immune and digestive systems, as well as the liver, kidneys, bone marrow and the endocrine system for its effects on the adrenal and thyroid glands.

Dogs and cats have two small glands, also known as anal sacs, which are located inside the anal opening, just inside the anal sphincter muscle. These small sacs contain a smelly pungent liquid that is unique to each dog and cat, which they use to identify each other and mark their territory.

Anal gland problems are fairly common in dogs and cats. If you see your dog or cat scooting (pulling themselves on their behind) across the floor or licking its anal area, your pet probably needs to have its anal glands cleaned and expressed. An animal with impacted anal glands may injure itself as it scoots across the floor and can discharge anal secretions onto the carpet or floor. Anal gland blockage can be painful and potentially dangerous for your pet.

Anal glands are normally the size of a kidney bean, but if they become impacted, infected or abscessed, the glands can become enlarged to the size of a grape. When an animal has loose stools or if they suffer from a blockage, they are unable to empty the sac and fluid accumulates. The accumulated fluid can become impacted and infected. A professional groomer or vet can quickly and easily express your animal’s anal glands.

If you see brown or green substances or blood, your animal could have an infection in its anal glands. Contact your veterinarian immediately!

The anal sacs are emptied by the pressure of stool passing through the anus. They can also be emptied by forceful contractions of the anal sphincter-something that may happen when a dog or cat is frightened or upset.

Anal sac disease is a cycle that begins with impaction and progresses through infection to abscess and rupture. Dogs and cats with anal problems may develop tonsillitis from licking at the rear area.

Impaction is the accumulation of pasty secretions in the anal sacs. The sacs become distended and mildly tender. The expressed secretions are thick and dark brown or grayish brown. The sacs become impacted when they don’t empty completely. This may be due to insufficient pressure on the sacs during defecation because of small, soft stools; inadequate sphincter pressure; or blockage of the openings by thick, dry secretions. Impactions tend to occur most often in small-breed dogs and in overweight animals.

Dogs and cats with recurrent anal sac impactions should have their sacs emptied at regular intervals. A dog or cat may benefit from a high-fiber diet or a bulk laxative to increase the size of the stools.
