Head Lice

Herbal remedies to help remove lice and limit lice infestation in dogs and cats.

The immune system is a complex array of cells that are found throughout your pet’s body. Immune cells are designed to function in conjunction with one another to provide a fortified defense against unwanted invaders. It is an intricate system that keeps your pet healthy and protects them against all sorts of invaders including allergens, viruses, bacteria, microbes, parasites and toxins.

The immune system is also directed at facilitating normal function and is not intended to be suppressed or stimulated. In cases of dysfunction, an animal’s body requires whole body systemic support. If your pet’s immune system is weakened, every body system is at risk.

Lice are parasites that live on the skin of a dog or cat. They are actually a small insect that feeds by chewing on the skin and by sucking the blood, depending on the type of louse. Left unchecked, lice can grow to be an infestation on a dog’s or cat’s body. Lice are not as common as fleas and occur most commonly where conditions are not sanitary.

Symptoms include:

Excessive itchiness and scratching

A dry scruffy-looking coat

Hair loss, most often around the ears, neck, shoulders, groin, and rectal area

Anemia, particularly in puppies and small dogs and particularly with severe infestation

There are two species of lice that infest dogs:

Trichodectes canis, known as a chewing louse; that is, it chews the skin of the dog it is infesting

Linognathus setosus, a sucking louse, one that sucks the blood of the dog instead of chewing the skin

Both types of lice can be passed directly from one dog to another through direct contact or through contact with contaminated objects, such as grooming utensils or bedding.

Lice are not species specific, meaning you can’t get lice from your dog or cat nor can your pet contract lice from you.

You should isolate your pet and keep them away from contact with other animals. Play should be restricted for at least 4 weeks while being treated. Daycare, boarding or other public situations where contact is likely should be avoided. While the insecticides may have killed the adult lice on your pet, you may risk re-infection is more eggs hatch and release nymphs, which are contagious to other animals.

Wash all bedding in hot water and dispose of combs, grooming brushes and other grooming equipment.

Conventional Remedies:

Diagnosis is easily made by visually observing lice or their eggs in the coat. Adult lice are flat, six-legged insects that lack wings and can be seen attached to hair shafts, appearing as small white dots.

Your vet will recommend a shampoo as well as well as insecticidal sprays and powders that are effective in killing lice. In addition, products such as fipronil and selamectin can also be used. It may be necessary to treat your animal more than once to kill the developing nits as they hatch. Follow your veterinarian’s directions closely, as these products can be harsh on some dogs, especially puppies.

In cases where your dog’s fur is badly matted, it may be necessary to shave the fur to be sure of getting to the deeper lice and their nits.

To prevent re-infection, dispose or wash your entire pet’s bedding and areas your pet sleeps or plays. Disinfect all grooming utensils and anything else your dog comes into contact with regularly, including crates, furniture, rugs, carpeting and hard flooring.
