Glucosamine for Dogs and Cats / Natural Glucosamine for Dogs and Cats

Plant and marine based nutrition to help deliver natural glucosamine to support relief of symptoms related to joint pain, muscle weakness and degenerative conditions such as arthritis in dogs and cats.

The canine and feline musculoskeletal system has many related components including bones, blood vessels, joints, ligaments, muscles, nerves, tendons, and support organs that require critical nutrients to nourish health and performance throughout the animal body. The musculoskeletal system also interacts with the liver, kidneys, and adrenal glands.

Age, injuries, genetics, wear and tear, environment and poor diet can undermine your pet’s joints and connective tissue, causing stiff and aching joints, degenerative disease and triggering inflammatory responses throughout the body.

Arthritis is a progressive disease related to inflammation in your pet's joints. Just as in humans, your dog and cat's daily activities can manifest as wear and tear and accumulative damage that occurs to the joint as the thin layer of protective cartilage breaks down . When this happens, your pet's body creates an inflammatory reaction which accelerates cartilage destruction. Because of its self-replicating destructive nature, arthritis requires a product that helps to repair and rebuild cartilage and connective tissue, helps to control your pet’s inflammatory response, helps to slow down cellular mutations or changes and helps support balanced immune health, since arthritis is related to a failure in immune balance.

Arthritis is an immune-related disease which can result from infection, trauma such as a ligament tear or rupture, and can be genetic, particularly for large breed dogs and cats. In cases of genetic predisposition, your pet may present malformation in its limbs, in breeds such as bull dogs and dachshunds.

Dogs and cats can have arthritis but present no signs of lameness or discomfort, however, it is generally understood that with age, or in cases of performance or working animals, arthritis can be assumed. Pets with obvious signs of arthritis will present symptoms of lameness, discomfort, swollen joints, pain, creaking, clicking, lethargy, inability to get up or climb stairs and may lose control of front or rear limbs.

Diet is important for a dog or cat suffering from arthritis. Select a holistic, grain free food that does not contain corn, wheat, soy, meat by products, chemical preservative or additives. A natural or organic food typically contains joint supporting glucosamine, MSM, a fish oil or natural lubricating plant for joints and connective tissue as well as a Probiotic to aid in digestion and nutrient assimilation, all of which are essential as a coordinated effort to help relieve joint pair and to help address symptoms of pain and inflammation.

Common symptoms of arthritis and degenerative joint conditions include:

Difficulty getting up

Pain when jumping

Joints making a creaking or crackling sound

Yelping from joint related pain

Conventional Remedies:

A diagnosis will be based on a history of trauma and symptoms presented and your vet will likely take x-rays and blood tests. Synthetic medications such as inflammatories (NSAIDs), aspirin, meloxicam, carprofen, phenylbutazone and corticosteroids are commonly prescribed to block pathways in pain response, but are commonly associated with serious side effects such as gastrointestinal problems including poor appetite, vomiting, gastro-intestinal ulcers and kidney damage. Cats should not be administered NSAID’s due to side effects.

Surgical treatments include joint fusion, joint replacement such as hip replacement, joint excision and amputation. Nonsurgical therapies include weight reduction, which has a significant impact on arthritis.
