Herbal treatments to help prevent and treat gastrointestinal bleeding in dogs and cats.

Nutrition plays a major role in bone, teeth, skin and coat health and is the result of a well-functioning, synchronized effort by the immune systems and tissues and organs in the body. Plant botanicals support the process of free radical scavenging, the skin’s ability to withstand the effects of environmental exposure to toxins, antigens and microorganisms by maintaining proper liver, adrenal, immune, and intestinal function; protect the skin and connective tissues in the joints, reduce inflammation in the joints, acidify urine, improve immune function and build resistance to allergies.

Maintaining gastrointestinal health in dogs and cats is important for not only the delivery of nutrients but also, the avoidance of specific diseases and conditions. Aside from an ordinary stomachache, other gastrointestinal conditions include irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, Gastroenteritis, dietary related gastric disorder, colitis and parasitic problems.

Noticeable signs of gastrointestinal distress include eating of grass, abdominal noises, vomiting and diarrhea, excessive drinking, increased body temperature or bloating. These general signs could be related to excess acid in the stomach, eating unfamiliar or low-quality foods, even eating foreign objects or substances or disease.

Easy ways to support gastrointestinal health include adding foods with:

High digestibility: Digestibility is a measure of how readily food nutrients are broken down and absorbed by the body. If a pet with gastrointestinal disease or distress is fed a food with low digestibility, symptoms will present, such as diarrhea. Many commercial pet foods contain inferior protein sources and have low digestibility ranging from 70 to 90%. Pets with gastrointestinal disorders should eat a diet with 85-90% digestibility to help minimize negative health reactions.

Moderate fat content:Foods with too much fat slow down the stomach’s ability to empty, increasing the risk for acid reflux, vomiting and diarrhea. Cats with gastrointestinal disease are much more tolerant of fat than dogs. In general, a diet low to moderate in fat (15-20% dry matter for cats and 6-15% dry matter in dogs) is recommended.

High protein content: High-quality, highly digestible protein sources benefit gastrointestinal function. A high protein diet is recommended for most pets with gastrointestinal conditions. Many pets that experience vomiting or diarrhea after eating a food are incorrectly diagnosed with "food allergies" to the protein components of the food (such as chicken, beef, eggs, etc.)

Often, negative gastrointestinal function is related to intolerance to a poorly digestible protein source, too much fat, or too many chemical and synthetic additives and preservatives. If you rule out highly digestible, lower fat foods and your pet still has problems; consider feeding your animal  a novel protein source such as venison, lamb, duck, etc.

"Good GI carbohydrate" choices:Cats with gastrointestinal disease feel better when they are not fed carbohydrates. Cats are obligate carnivores and do not tolerate carbohydrates well. For dogs, certain carbohydrates are healthy and highly digestible. White rice is gluten-free, as well as potato and tapioca.

Dairy (lactose) free:Pets lose the ability to properly digest dairy products with age as well and foods that contain lactose can worsen gas, diarrhea and bloating.

Supplemented with Omega 3 fatty acids: Omega 3Fatty acids provide anti-inflammatory benefits as well as lubricate the joints.

Contains Prebiotics and Probiotics: Both support and enhance digestion.  Prebiotics are specialized forms of fiber that stimulate the growth and function of healthy bacteria in the intestines. Common prebiotics added to pet food include inulin and FOS (fructo-oligosaccharides).

Probiotics are live, healthy bacteria that help to restore bacterial balance within the intestine. Common probiotics added to pet food include Lactobacillus, Bifid bacterium and Enterococcus.

Contains no synthetic food additives: Artificial preservatives, flavors, colors and dyes will exacerbate gastrointestinal disorders

Fiber: Fiber can help improve stool quality in pets with constipation or colitis. Fiber includes soluble or insoluble forms of fiber. Soluble fibers help increase the water content of the feces and may help ease passage of stool. Insoluble fibers are used to improve the quality of soft stool or to help stimulate the motility of the colon in cases of constipation.

Examples of soluble fiber commonly included in pet food include FOS (fructo-oligosaccharides), pectins, beet pulp, psyllium, oats, barley, guar gum, fruits, root vegetables, peas, etc.

Sources of insoluble fiber often included in pet food are cellulose and methylcellulose. Natural foods offer insoluble fiber found in cereal fibers, including wheat and rye fibers, potato or other vegetable skins, etc.

Homemade diet: A homemade diet with a single protein and a single, highly digestible carbohydrate source, such as chicken and rice, turkey and potato can benefit pets with gastrointestinal health
