Natura Petz supplements to help reduce fighting and aggression in dogs and cats

Dogs and cats commonly experience imbalance in their body systems just like we do. When animals display aggressive or negative behaviors, a nutritional correction to the Central and Autonomic Nervous systems may help restore emotional balance, promote relaxation, balance mood and help provide feelings of comfort and security.

Fighting is defined as aggressive behavior that may also include barking, biting, growling, hissing or scratching humans or other animals.

Many dogs and cats experience emotional distress from environmental and situational stressors such as introduction of a new pet or family member into the home; separation anxiety; traveling, boarding, daycare, vet and grooming visits; loss of a family member or family pet; visiting guests; transitional or traumatic events; abuse, pain or neglect; a genetic predisposition to fear or feelings of uneasiness; or may be ill or have an unknown disease.

Other factors which may cause aggression in pets include excitability, socialization problems, breeding, fear, inter-male rivalry, territorial tendencies, maternal fear to protect a litter and underlying physical symptoms such as pain or discomfort.

Electrical storms, thunder storms and fireworks can produce a produce a tremendous stress load on your pet and your animal may pant, pace, urine mark, scratch excessively, tremble, shiver and if not treated, aggressive behavior may develop.

Animals instinctively want to protect themselves if they are placed in a defensive situation and their behavior can become dangerous if uncontrolled.

Observing your pet's body posture will tell you if your pet is at risk for fighting. A dog may lower its head, flatten its ears, raise its hackles, growl, show teeth, pull back its lips or wrinkle its muzzle.

A cat may spit, hiss, point its ears forward or to the side, its tail may be held downward with the tip swaying and its backside may be higher than the rest of its body.  A cat may also assume a crouching position and its eyes may appear dilated with the hair on the back (hackles) puffed up and claws out when it wants to attack.

Practical suggestions to reduce fighting and aggression:

1. Socialize your pet early with other dogs and cats, attending obedience class and personally establishing a relationship where you are the boss.

2. Expose your pet to a variety of people, places and situations at a young age are helpful.

3. If needed, consulting an animal behaviorist to help prevent or ease problems associated with aggressive behavior.

4. Diet can have a tremendous impact on general wellness in your dog or cat. If you are feeding a food that contains corn, wheat, soy, meat by products, chemical additives or fillers, and inferior protein sources that deliver little nutritional value for your pet, upgrade your food. Animals that are fed an inappropriate diet may lack nutrients and minerals, leading to constant hunger, allergies and serious illness.

5. Ensure your pet gets plenty of exercise and affection to release energy and to feel secure.

6. If your animal routinely exhibits signs of aggressive behavior, use a muzzle or Gentle Leader to limit contact with people or other animals. Use kennels or crates to confine an aggressive or agitated animal.

7. Do not play aggressively with your pet as it creates confusion as to what constitutes an acceptable play routine.

8. Spay or neuter your dog or cat.
