Ear Infections in Dogs / Ear Infections in Cats

Herbal remedies to help address symptoms of ear infection and to help relieve ear infections in dogs and cats.

The immune system is a complex army of cells that are found throughout your pet’s body that align to form a fortified defense against unwanted invaders. It is an intricate system that keeps your pet healthy and protects them against allergens, viruses, bacteria, microbes, parasites and toxins.

The immune system is also tasked to support balanced function and is not intended to be suppressed or stimulated. In cases of dysfunction, an animal’s body requires whole body systemic support. If your pet’s immune system is weakened, every body system is at risk and creates a niche for disease to present.

Dogs and cats develop allergies just as humans do, and for the same reasons. An allergic reaction occurs when your pet develops a hypersensitive response to a foreign substance or irritant and creates a histamine attack to ward off the invaders.

Dogs and cats are often prone to ear infections and due to their amazing hearing ability, infections are usually accompanied with extreme pain and discomfort. Because animal ears are shaped intricately, earwax, debris and parasites can easily become trapped and lead to an ear infection. The most common ear infection is otitis externa, which is an infection of the external ear canal. Another common ear infection is otitis media, which is an infection of the middle ear.

Ear infections tend to affect certain dog breeds more than others, including Basset hounds, Cocker spaniels, Schnauzers and Miniature poodles. In cats, Persian and Himilayan breeds are also more susceptible to ear infection. Dogs and cats can also be genetically predisposed to ear infection due to a growth abnormality.

Most ear infections are caused by bacterial or yeast infections. Other factors include the accumulation of wax, debris, thick, matted hair trapped in the ear canal or other foreign objects. Allergies, ear mites, improper cleaning of the ear or impaired drainage of the, ulceration and tumors can also cause ear infection.

Common symptoms/signs of an ear infection include:

Shaking of the head on one side

Pawing at the affected ear.

Facial shaking the head

Holding the head to one side (usually related to a middle ear infection)

Scratching at the ears

Pain in the ear

Rubbing ears against furniture or carpet

Yellow, brown or black discharge in the ears

Red, inflamed and tender ears

Foul odor from the ears

Paralysis may present. (Your pet’s eyelids may droop, may experience difficulty swallowing, the eyelid could be covered due to drooping skin and balance can be affected)

Ear infections are a serious problem and can lead to hearing loss and neurological difficulties, however, prompt treatment can usually and successfully treat ear infections.

Conventional Remedies:

The diagnosis of a middle or inner ear infection is based on symptoms and a thorough examination of the ear, including an otoscopic exam to view the ear canal and determine if the eardrum is intact.

If the eardrum is ruptured or filled with fluid, this is usually a sign of a middle and inner ear infection. Anesthesia or sedation may also be used if the pet finds the otoscopy too painful. X-rays as well as a sample of the material in the ear canal is taken and examined under a microscope to determine the cause of the infection.

The treatment for ear infections depends on the underlying cause and severity of the infection. Very often underlying conditions such as allergies, tumors or polyps may bring about ear infections, but if treated immediately, can greatly reduce the infection. Medications to treat the symptoms of ear infection include antibiotics or antifungal drugs.

Cleaning your pet’s ears daily for the next week will also be recommended, and your vet will demonstrate how to do this properly without hurting your animal. Please use an ear cleaner specifically formulated for dogs and cats that is free of harsh chemicals and preservatives. Independent pet retailers will offer such products.

In more severe cases, surgical procedures which involve an incision of the eardrum, the removal of the ear canal or bony covering of the ear may be required.
