Herbal remedies for the treatment for the symptoms of dermtologic conditions (internal and external) in cats and dogs.

The immune system is a complex array of cells that are found throughout your pet’s body. Immune cells are designed to function in conjunction with one another to provide a fortified defense against unwanted invaders. It is an intricate system that keeps your pet healthy and protects them against all sorts of invaders including allergens, viruses, bacteria, microbes, parasites and toxins.

The immune system is also directed at facilitating normal function and is not intended to be suppressed or stimulated. In cases of dysfunction, an animal’s body requires whole body systemic support. If your pet’s immune system is weakened, every body system is at risk.

Although Dermatitis is often wrongly likened to eczema, it is really inflammation of the skin. Dermatitis rash appears itchy and red and your pet may scratch excessively at the affected area for relief. Unfortunately, scratching leads to more lesions, more itchiness and a worsening of the condition. In general, all types of rashes related to dermatitis involve the same characteristics, including skin cancer, eczema and seborrhea.

Types of dermatitis associated with rash include:

Flea-bite Dermatitis (Caused by flea saliva residue on your pet’s skin)

Allergic contact dermatitis (Your pet has a delayed hypersensitivity to allergens such as dryer sheets, bleach, fertilizers, carpet cleaners and flea collars)

Atopic dermatitis (An allergic-type reaction that is accompanied by wheezing, asthma, and very dry skin).

Seborrheic dermatitis (Your pet has yellow, greasy scales, similar to dandruff, especially in wrinkles or folds of the skin).

Autosensitization dermatitis (An itchy rash that occurs in response to an intense inflammatory process somewhere else on the body, especially fungal infections).

Lichen simplex chronicus (A rash caused by long-term scratching of an area, and as a result, forms thickened skin).

Pyotraumatic dermatitis (Also known as a "hot spot," which is a red, moist, hairless, painful-looking sore that can appear suddenly in a localized or general area of the body.)

Canine acral lick dermatitis (Common in dogs, who spend a lot of time licking a particular spot on one leg, and an infected wound eventually arises at the site).

Canine sarcoptic mange (An extremely painful and irritating condition caused by Sarcoptes mites and commonly manifests on a dog's abdomen, chest, legs and ears)

Feline notoedric mange (Microscopic mites, called Notoedres cati, which typically infests the skin of cats around the ears, face, and neck).

Symptoms most commonly associated with Dermatitis include:

Persistent scratching of a particular area

Persistent licking of a particular area

Appearance of a red, painful-looking sores (often suddenly)

Scaly, rough skin, accompanied by hair loss

Oozing areas on the skin, usually accompanied by hair loss

Pet fleas are the primary reason for dermatitis. While bathing regularly is recommended, do not bathe too often. Use a holistic, natural, gentle shampoo, rinse thoroughly and dry them off properly.

Do not use human perfumes, moisturizers or talc on your pet’s skin.

Treat other rashes, especially fungal infections, even though they may not seem related and look closely for infection.

Avoid dressing your pet in clothing. Your pet’s skin needs to ‘breathe’ and in the case of dermatitis related to allergies or triggers, detergents, air fresheners and scented carpet cleaners may be at fault for your pet’s irritated skin.

Conventional Remedies:

Dermatitis is typically diagnosed based on the history and appearance of the rash or dry skin. Your vet will inspect the affected area to determine the exact type of dermatitis presenting, such as contact or atopic dermatitis or fugal infection, although diagnosis is difficult.

If your pet’s dermatitis results from flea bites, action should be taken to rid the home of fleas. Corticosteroids such as injectable dexamethasone and oral antibiotics may be given to calm the itching and inflammation.

Drugs such as steroids and antihistamines may be prescribed to relieve the symptoms of itchiness and inflammation in pets, however, like any synthetic drug, are usually accompanied with side effects, whose long-term effects are unknown.

The drugs that are usually prescribed for animals have been developed for human use. The problem is that animals metabolize medications at approximately a 50% faster rate than humans, and the drugs can be damaging to the liver, kidneys and gall bladder. Use caution when administering synthetic medications for your pet.

Long-term steroid use is discouraged because these drugs work by suppressing the immune system. This means that over time your pet may be left vulnerable to infection, diabetes, and other conditions.
