Cytomegalovirus  in Cats / CMV / Feline Herpes / Feline Rhinopneumonitis (FVR) / Toxoplasmosis / Canine Herpes

Herbal nutrition to help address symptoms related to viral infections such as cytomegalovirus.

The immune system is a complex army of cells found throughout your pet’s body that provides a fortified defense against unwanted invaders. It is an intricate system that helps keep your pet healthy and protects them against allergens, viruses, bacteria, microbes, parasites, toxins, foreign cells and cellular mutations (healthy cells which have mutated into irregular cells). The immune system is tasked with protecting EVERY cell in the animal body.

A healthy immune system is resilient and powerful and is designed to support normal, balanced function, referred to as homeostasis. The immune system is not intended to be suppressed or stimulated. But even an animal with a highly developed immune system can experience dysfunction or failure. In cases of dysfunction, an animal body requires whole body systemic support to return to a state of balanced immunity. If your pet’s immune system is weakened, every bodily system is at risk for disease and infection.

Cytomegalovirus, also known as CMV, is related to the herpes virus, also called feline viral rhinopneumonitis (FVR), rhinotracheitis virus and feline herpes virus type 1 (FHV-1). It is one of the most common causes of upper respiratory infections in cats. Many dogs and cats are exposed to the virus at some point in their lives, and the condition can remain dormant, with your pet showing no symptoms (asymptomatic), yet can become activated if your pet's immunity is compromised.

Cats of all sizes, ages and breeds are susceptible to feline herpes. Up to 90 percent of all cats may be infected with herpes FHV-1. Many kittens become infected at birth from their mothers. Most cats will remain carriers throughout their lives without presenting symptoms. Cats in the greatest risk categories include senior, kitten, immuno-compromised and convalescing, and cats in stressful, crowded environments, such as shelters and catteries, as well as specific breeds such as Persians.

The most common way for the cytomegalovirus to spread is through contact with discharge from an infected cat’s eyes, mouth or nose, from grooming and in sharing litter boxes, food and water dishes.

Multiple-pet households also have a greater risk of infection because of the ease in which the virus can be passed through nose, mouth and eye discharge, even when the infected pet is not showing any symptoms.

Remember: Humans and dogs are not at risk for catching feline herpes, and cats cannot catch the strains of herpes that humans carry.

Symptoms of Cytomegalovirus:

Sneezing attacks (sneezing is very rare in cats; less so for dogs)

Watery nose discharge

Watery eye discharge

Watery mouth discharge

Pink eye

Lesions in the eyes

Lesions around the eyes

Eye ulcers

Loss of appetite

Toxoplasmosis is another form of the cytomegalovirus, and is an infection caused by the Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) parasite. It is one of the most common parasitic diseases, mostly affecting cats, but dogs can also host the parasite. Cats and dogs can become infected by contracting the T. gondii parasite through infected soil or from eating feces.

The T. gondii parasite completes its life cycle in the animal host, however, cats (not dogs) are able to pass the parasite through the feces and into the environment, continuing its life cycle.

Both acute and chronic forms of toxoplasmosis occur. The chronic form is usually a low-grade disease without any clinical symptoms. The acute form of toxoplasmosis usually presents symptoms, affecting cats at a greater ratio than dogs.

Symptoms of toxoplasmosis include:

Weight loss

Shortness of breath

Difficulty walking

Muscular weakness

Partial paralysis

Complete parlaysis

Abdominal Pain

Loss of appetite

Inflammation of the tonsils

Inflammation of the retina

Inflammation of middle part of the eye

Inflammation of the cornea

Canine Herpes

The canine herpes virus is commonly known as CHV and is the leading cause of death in puppies younger than 3 weeks old. The virus can cause mild respiratory illness which dogs with healthy immune systems can usually overcome.

The canine herpes virus can be sexually transmitted. Adult dogs can be latent carriers and show no symptoms (asymptomatic) for years of the disease. The virus is estimated to affect 2 out of 3 dogs.

Symptoms of Canine Herpes may include:

Lack of appetite

Refusal to nurse

Blisters on vaginal wall of female dogs
