Chronic Bronchitis in Dogs / Chronic Bronchitis in Cats

Herbal nutrition to help address symptoms of chronic bronchitis in dogs and cats.

The immune system is a complex army of cells found through out your pet’s body that provides a fortified defense against unwanted invaders. It is an intricate system that keeps your pet healthy and protects them against allergens, viruses, bacteria, microbes, parasites, toxins, foreign cells and cellular mutations (healthy cells which have mutated into irregular cells). The immune system is tasked with protecting EVERY cell in the animal body.

A healthy immune system is powerful and tasked with supporting normal, balanced function. The immune system is not supposed to be suppressed or stimulated.  But even an animal with a highly developed immune system can experience dysfunction or failure. In cases of dysfunction, an animal body requires whole body systemic support. If your pet’s immune system is weakened, every bodily system is at risk for disease.

Chronic bronchitis, also known as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), is the result of mucous membranes in the bronchi becoming inflamed, producing a chronic, troubling cough in your pet.

Respiratory infections in pets are caused by harmful organisms such as viruses, bacteria or fungi which may bring about a combination eye, nose, and throat and sinus problems. In addition, a weakened immune system, irritants such as pollution or chemicals and other underlying diseases may also contribute to respiratory infections in pets.

COPD can be caused by a number and/or combination of bacterial and viral agents called Bordetella Bronchiseptica and Canine Para influenza. Other less common agents such as Adenovirus Types 1 and 2 and Mycoplasma may also cause kennel cough. COPD is a highly contagious respiratory infection affecting dogs and cats, but tends to be more common in dogs.

Common symptoms and signs may include:

Dry, hacking sound

Pet trying to clear throat

Pet appears to have something is stuck in throat

Honk-like, coarse, dry cough

Large amount of foamy mucus

Phlegm occurs after coughing

Conventional Remedies:

This condition is transmitted when dogs are in close contact with each in an enclosed environment (kennels, dog shows or animal shelters) or through sharing food and water bowls. When a dog coughs or barks, the bacteria become airborne and if inhaled by another dog, kennel cough develops.

If your dog’s cough persists or fever, depression, abnormal nasal discharge or lung sounds are present, you should consult your vet immediately. A physical examination, chest-x-ray and complete blood count will be performed to rule out any other health complications.

Bronchitis is self-limiting and symptoms usually resolve on its own within one to two weeks without treatment. Vaccinations against kennel cough are available and are quite effective in minimizing this disorder. These annual and bi-annual vaccinations include Adenovirus type 1 and 2, Para influenza and Bordatella bronchiseptica and may be administered in the form of injection or nasal drops.

The nasal vaccine like Bordetella tends to produce a higher level of immunity than the injectable vaccines. Your vet will most likely suggest an additional booster if your dog is exposed to other dogs, for instance at dog training or at a boarding facility.

Treatment includes cough suppressants for mild coughs while antibiotics may be prescribed for severe, persistent coughs accompanied with a fever and to prevent secondary bacterial infections such as pneumonia.
