Canker Sores

Canker Sores

Herbal remedies to help treat cankers sores in dogs and cats.

The immune system is a complex array of cells that are found throughout your pet’s body. Immune cells are designed to function in conjunction with one another to provide a fortified defense against unwanted invaders. It is an intricate system that keeps your pet healthy and protects them against all sorts of invaders including allergens, viruses, bacteria, microbes, parasites and toxins.

The immune system is also directed at facilitating normal function and is not intended to be suppressed or stimulated. In cases of dysfunction, an animal’s body requires whole body systemic support. If your pet’s immune system is weakened, every body system is at risk.

Your dog and cat may experience mouth sores for a variety of reasons, including poor oral health, dental issues, teeth problems or internal, gastrointestinal issues. Mouth sores are more common in senior animals although all breeds and ages of dogs and cats can be affected. Mouth sores can show up on the lips, face, and the inner lining of the mouth. If your pet’s mouth appears to be pink and smooth that is a good sign of a healthy mouth.

If you suspect a problem, look into the dog's mouth. If you see sores, rashes or swelling, you should consult a veterinarian to determine diagnosis as the underlying condition can be life threatening.  Pain will accompany canker sores, so please feed a soft food diet (holistic, grain free), use a pain reliever such as Soothed & Serene or crushed ice to provide topical pain relief.

Emergency situations that may be related to canker sores:

Ingesting Antifreeze: Antifreeze has a sweet taste that dogs like. The dog may have found a small spillage on the driveway or street. Sores will develop 36 to 72 hours after ingestion. Your pet may exhibit signs of

vomiting, wobbling, excess drinking or lack of urinating. This is a medical emergency.

Mouth Trauma: An injury to the mouth can result in a sore. Playing with another dog or cat can result in a claw or tooth jabbing in the mouth, or injury to the mouth through play with a stick or toy. If you detect an injury, rinse your pet’s mouth with water and swab the sore with a clean, soft wet cloth. Crushed ice can temporarily relieve pain and inflammation. Feed soft food until the mouth sore heals and monitor for infection.

Blisters and Pustules: Blisters can form due to allergies, as a reaction to medication or foot that is too hot.

Bullous Pemphigold: A rare disease called Bullous Pemphigold can cause blisters in the mouth and can be fatal if left untreated.

Conventional Remedies

Most sores of the mouth are due to a lack of oral hygiene. Your vet may recommend an at-home dental plan for your pet. Brush your dog's teeth at least twice weekly and use dental chew bones and treats to help prevent tartar and plaque buildup.
