Herbal treatments to help treat and prevent all types of worm infections in dogs and cats.

The immune system is a complex array of cells that are found throughout your pet’s body. Immune cells are designed to function in conjunction with one another to provide a fortified defense against unwanted invaders. It is an intricate system that keeps your pet healthy and protects them against all sorts of invaders including allergens, viruses, bacteria, microbes, parasites and toxins.

The immune system is also directed at facilitating normal function and is not intended to be suppressed or stimulated. In cases of dysfunction, an animal’s body requires whole body systemic support. If your pet’s immune system is weakened, every body system is at risk.

The four most common worms (intestinal parasites) are roundworms, hookworms, tapeworms, and whip worms. Common symptoms of worms include diarrhea, vomiting, weight loss, and anemia.

The topic of worms is unpleasant, but unfortunately, a common occurrence in dogs and cats.

intestinal parasites are present in dogs and cats, and much of the time, are relatively harmless to our animals. There are some species that can seriously compromise the immune and digestive systems and are particularly damaging to puppies and kittens.

A majority of puppies and kittens are infested with intestinal worms when born. They contract worms in-vitro from their mothers. As the immune systems of puppies and kittens is still developing and tends to be weak, they can easily become infested and overcome by worms.

Environmental conditions can also encourage worm infestation, including living in crowded or undesirable conditions, in shelters or in situations where nutrition is poor.

Common symptoms of worms in dogs include digestive problems, such as:

Gastrointestinal disturbances

As the worms are competing with the dog for nutrients, you will also notice such symptoms as:

Weight loss

Stunted growth

Finally, worms can cause discomfort and itching, depending on where they are located in the animal body. Segments of live tapeworms can be excreted via the anus, which can cause your pet to itch and scratch around the base of the tail. Your pet may also scoot across the floor. Larvae of some worms (hookworms and roundworms) may migrate to your pet's lungs, causing your animal to develop a cough.

There are several common types of worms that are intestinal parasites:

Tapeworms are commonly found in dogs and cats. They can be transmitted by fleas, food sources, or feces. Although the appearance of tapeworms is unpleasant, they are seldom a serious threat to your pet's health. You would not even know if your pet has tapeworms unless a fecal analysis done. Occasionally, you may see segments of the worm apparent in your pet's feces or on the hair near the anus. If your pet is healthy and has a strong immune system, tapeworm infestation is usually short term and harmless.

Ringworm, also referred to as dermaphytosis, is a highly contagious fungal infection of the skin. It typically affects the scalp, body and nails. Ringworm tends to affect younger animals more frequently. Pets with weakened immune systems or existing skin disorders are also more susceptible to ringworm.

This infection is transmitted directly from one animal to the other animal. Pets may also spread the infection to people or it may be spread from person to person. Because fungi is part and parcel of our environment, this infection in pets may also be spread indirectly by sharing food and water bowls, hair brushes, sleeping environments or digging in contaminated soil.

Wound Care

Roundworms are the most common type of worm in dogs and cats, and is especially prevalent in puppies (over 95% of puppies are born with roundworms). Puppies acquire roundworms from their mothers, and infestation can only be detected by fecal analyses. Roundworms can pose a more serious threat to the health of puppies and kittens and can cause illness and death.

Hookworms are not as common as tapeworms and roundworms but they cannot be overlooked. Hookworms can be transmitted to puppies and kittens in the same way as roundworms.

Hookworms are very small and are difficult to be detected. Heavy infestation of hookworms poses a serious health problem to puppies and kittens since the worms attach to the intestinal walls and suck blood.

Whip worms

Whip worms usually affect young adult dogs and cats. Persistent, watery diarrhea is a sign of prolonged infestation, which may cause severe intestinal distress. Diagnosis of infestation is by fecal analysis.

Conventional Remedies:

If you suspect that your pet has worms, it is essential to take her to the veterinarian so that a fecal analysis can be performed to determine what type of worm and how serious the infestation is.

Since roundworms, hookworms and whipworms can cause great distress on our pet's intestinal and immune systems, fecal analyses and, if infestation is confirmed, deworming is recommended. Synthetic medications will likely be suggested. There are effective natural dewormers, such as Shake Ur Groove Thing. And supplements can also be added to keep intestinal parasites in check.

Deworming involves the use of strong chemicals which may put additional stress on your pet's body. It is not advisable to use such a program to get rid of tapeworms, which are generally harmless. Try a milder herbal and other natural alternatives since they are gentle, yet effective for your animal.

Remember that an animal suffering from worm infestation is very often weak due to malnutrition (the worms consumes essential nutrients) and/or anemia. It is important to replenish the supply of essential nutrients to strengthen immunity.

While your pet is treated for worms, it is essential to feed nutritious foods. For dogs, a diet high in protein and fat is desirable (e.g. 40% of the diet should come from meat or eggs) as well as an Omega 3 and 6 source.

Some intestinal parasites (e.g. hookworms) can remove large amounts of blood from your pet, causing anemia. To replenish the all-important iron that is lost in the blood, add supplements such as The Daily Paws or I AM A Rock Star.

To ensure that your pet digest his foods properly and is able to absorb nutrients, it is also recommended to add a Probiotic with digestive enzymes such as Yummy Tummy.
