The immune system is a complex army of cells found through out your pet’s body that provides a fortified defense against unwanted invaders. It is an intricate system that keeps your pet healthy and protects them against allergens, viruses, bacteria, microbes, parasites, toxins, foreign fells and cellular mutations (healthy cells which have mutated into irregular cells). The immune system is tasked with protecting EVERY cell in the animal body.

A healthy immune system is resilient and powerful and up to the task of supporting normal, balanced function. The immune system is not intended to be suppressed or stimulated.  But even an animal with a highly developed immune system can experience dysfunction or failure. In cases of dysfunction, an animal body requires whole body systemic support. If your pet’s immune system is weakened, every bodily system is at risk for disease.

Wheezing in cats and dogs is most commonly associated with asthma. Wheezing associated with asthma may have different causes. Allergies can also be the culprit and is more common in dogs than cats but several different problems can also lead to sneezing and wheezing in cats.

Asthma, also called chronic bronchitis, is a serious respiratory disease that affects dogs and cats. It is a chronic (ongoing) condition characterized by inflammation and thickening of the small airways (bronchioles) in the lungs. Asthma affects animals the same way as humans. When your pet inhales, the inflamed airways collapse making it difficult to catch its breath. In severe cases of asthma, the airways become blocked with mucus and the smooth muscles that surrounds the airways begin to spasm (bronchospasm), further restricting breath.

Asthma presents more frequently in younger to middle aged animals but it can affect pets of all ages and breeds. Pets that are immuno-compromised, stressed or suffer from systemic infections are at greater risk. Siamese cats and bulldogs are especially predisposed.

Sinus infections, allergies, viruses and foreign objects or growths in the nose are some of the most common causes of wheezing. If your pet has an infection in or around its teeth, it can cause a chronic sinus infection. Stress may also cause wheezing in cats, including inhaled substances related to pollen, mold, dust, tobacco smoke, perfumes, candles, dusty cat litter, and powdered carpet deodorizers. Most asthma attacks are triggered by allergens in the environment.

The onset of asthma in pets has been linked to the presence of chemicals in rugs, household cleaners and food. Some holistic vets think the commercial foods we feed our pets are filled with chemical preservatives and colorants and when combined with persistent vaccinations, our animals immune systems are severely strained, and allergies develop.

Another cause for wheezing may be related to lung parasites, including lung worms and heart worms. In cases of lung parasites, your pet may cough as if a hairball is present, and will have great difficulty breathing. Your pet may have shortness of breath or breathing may be fast or shallow. If your cat breathes with its mouth open, this is a veterinary emergency.

Mild cases of asthma might be unnoticed if it presents as a dry cough that may progress to wheezing, but may be associated with weight gain or fur balls.

Severe asthma attacks can be life-threatening as your pet strains to breathe and presents with shallow, rapid and labored breath as evidenced by movement in the abdomen. Dogs and cats may assume a prayer position or extends their heads with their feet away from their chest. After an attack, your animal may be lethargic, listless and severely taxed. Check your pets tongue and gums for a blue or purple hue and if detected, take your pet to your veterinarian immediately as severe oxygen deprivation is occurring and can be fatal.
