Nutrition plays a major role in bone, teeth, skin and coat health and is the result of a well-functioning, synchronized effort by the immune systems and tissues and organs in the body. Plant botanicals help support the process of free radical scavenging, and helps the skin’s ability to withstand and repair the effects of environmental exposure to toxins, antigens, microorganisms, bacteria, viruses, infections and wounds.

The immune system is a complex army of cells found through out your pet’s body that provides a fortified defense against unwanted invaders. It is an intricate system that keeps your pet healthy and protects them against allergens, viruses, bacteria, microbes, parasites, toxins, foreign fells and cellular mutations (healthy cells which have mutated into irregular cells). The immune system is tasked with protecting EVERY cell in the animal body.

A healthy immune system is resilient and powerful and up to the task of supporting normal, balanced function. The immune system is not intended to be suppressed or stimulated.  But even an animal with a highly developed immune system can experience dysfunction or failure. In cases of dysfunction, an animal body requires whole body systemic support. If your pet’s immune system is weakened, every bodily system is at risk for disease.

Tumors are abnormal growths of body tissue and are a sign of an immune system out of balance. Tumors are typically classified as cancerous (malignant) or non-cancerous (benign). Cancerous tumors can spread at a rapid rate and can metastasize to other areas of the body. Common malignant tumors in pets include mammary gland tumors, mast cell tumors, oral tumors, malignant melanoma and fibrosarcoma.

Tumors occur when there is a problem with the way in which cells of the body divide. Cell division is a strictly controlled process, with new cells being created to replace old cells, and damaged cells, dying so that they can be replaced. However, when this balance is disturbed, a tumor can develop.

While a clear cause of a tumor is not always know, there are a few known contributing factors. Among these are a lowered immune system, obesity, genetic problems, environmental toxins such as cigarette smoke, poor food quality, chemicals found inside and outside of the house and even excessive exposure to sunlight has been attributed in some breeds.

With early detection and prompt treatment, even some of the more serious tumors may be successfully treated.

Benign tumors are generally less serious and typically do not metastasize to other areas of the body. However, some benign tumors can grow to mammoth proportions and when they are left untreated they can eventually cause serious complications.

One of the most common tumors seen in vet rooms is lipomas, which are benign soft tissue tumors composed of fatty tissue. Usually found under the skin, these growths are painless and in many cases completely harmless to your pet.

The areas of the animal body that are most commonly affected by lipomas and tumors include the paws, legs, limbs, joints, skin, lymph glands, and internal organs. Inflammation is generally not cause for major concern and often occurs in warmer weather or as a result of superficial wounds in the form of small cuts and scrapes. If swelling occurs throughout the animal body, this may be a sign of a long-term, progressive disease.

Plant nutrition can be a powerful ally in your pet’s body, particularly as it relates to balancing immunity, limiting abnormal cell growth which causes tumor and lipomas to grow exponentially, and providing nutritional support to organs and tissues which may be at risk. Cancer is a modern disease and in its simplest terms, the result of an immune system that has been overwhelmed and unable to rid of toxins; often due to toxicity and poor nutrition. The best likely defense for your dog or cat is to support optimal immunity, feed, a premium holistic diet, provide filtered, fresh water daily and limit chemical exposure, including common things inside the home like dryer sheets, room fresheners, and candles.

Conventional Remedies:

Your veterinarian will examine your pet and the tumor, if it is an external one, and may ask you a number of questions about symptoms.

Your met may suggest a biopsy which is usually necessary to determine if the growth is cancerous. Depending on the case, this can be done with either a simple needle biopsy, or by having the tumor removed and biopsied post-operatively. Once a definite diagnosis has been made, your veterinarian can advise what treatment options would best suit your pet.

The treatment of tumors depends entirely on the type of tumor and the severity. Small benign tumors such as lipomas that are not growing and are not causing your pet any discomfort may simply be monitored regularly, while other tumors require swift surgical removal and possibly further treatments if the tumor was cancerous.

Standard treatment options also include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, which have many side effects
