Animals routinely experience irregularities in bodily systems, including all parts of the Central and Autonomic Nervous systems, requiring a nutritional correction to help reduce emotional imbalance, to help soothe upset stomachs, to help reduce motion sickness, to help reduce stress and anxiety while traveling or in motion, to help promote relaxation, to help balance mood and help provide feelings of comfort and security.

Many pet parents are surprised to learn that dogs and cats commonly experience motion sickness. Any motion that a pet is not used to can cause illness and disorientation. When it involves travel, each animal is different. While some animals will jump into a car for a ride, for other dogs and cats, it is a stressful event accompanied with stress and potential illness.

Some of the first signs of car sickness your pet may display are yawning, excessive drooling and/or vomiting.

Car sickness can be caused by:

Car motion

Confinement

Previous bad experiences in a car (vet or grooming visit, boarding, stressful travel, motion sickness and other reasons)

A first-time ride

Anticipation of the destination and the unknown

Conditioning your pet to be less fearful of the car may be helpful in overcoming motion or car sickness. You can begin by sitting with your pet inside a parked car with the engine off, playing with toys and giving your pet praise and positive attention. This time will allow your pet to familiarize itself with the new surroundings and will likely be relatively anxiety free. Repeat this exercise for a few days.

The next step is to repeat the process, but with the engine running. Your dog or cat may need extra levels of praise and assurance that the car is still a safe place. If your pet is relaxed, you may try backing out of the driveway, and if possible, taking a short drive around the block. While driving and upon returning home, make sure you shower your dog and cat with positive reinforcement and extra praise.

Over time, you can slowly increase the distance you travel. Conditioning your pet may be an important step in reducing motion sickness or nausea related to travel, but it does not guarantee your pet may not get sick. Herbal remedies and supplements, or a vet recommended product, can be powerful tools to increasing your pet's comfort and reducing the stress, pain and discomfort travel may create.

Helpful suggestions:

Use a calm, soothing and assuring voice with an anxious pet. If you raise your voice, it will only compound their stress.

Give your pet a gentle, calming herb that also affects motion and balance receptors in the brain. (See below).

While traveling with your pet in the car, open a window to get some fresh air.

Allow your dog and cat to be able to look forward to see the road ahead or look out the window to reduce uncertainly.

Be safe. If your dog or cat is jumping around inside your car, use a crate for a short time.
