Herbal nutrition to help prevent urine leakage in dogs and cats with urinary incontinence.

When the kidneys experience dysfunction, they require nutritional support to help rehabilitate function, as well as organs that are impacted by the kidneys, including the liver, cardiovascular system and autonomic nervous systems. Plant botanicals may also help tone and strengthen the bladder and surrounding connective tissue matrix, important in cases where the proper tone of the bladder has been interrupted.

Urinary Incontinence is uncontrolled leakage or dribbling of urine from the bladder. It is fairly common in spayed female dogs and cats as well as neutered male dogs and cats. If your pet is suffering from urinary incontinence, puddles of urine will appear when your pet is not actively trying to urinate. Urine may also leak out when your pet jumps, gets excited or when he or she gets up from lying down. Your pet may even dribble when relaxing or sleeping.

Urinary incontinence is most often due to inadequate closure of the urethral sphincter, which is a circle of muscles that contracts to stop urine from flowing out of the bladder. Incontinence may develop from a spinal injury due to damage to the nerve supply of the bladder but it can also result from surgery related to spaying or neutering or with age or injury to the bladder.

Common causes of leaking urine include:

Bladder stones

Tumors of the bladder

Fear and submissive behavior can also be related to incontinence.

For pets experiencing incontinence, you may notice the smell of urine; your pet may not. Please remain patient. It's important to discover the reason for incontinence and to rule out injury or disease.

After being spayed, the levels of oestradiol decrease in your pet's body. This decrease in oestradiol causes the tissues of the urogenital system to shrink, interrupting the urethral sphincter to close tightly. As a result, urine may leak. Pets with urinary incontinence are sometimes described as having "weak bladders".

Helpful suggestions:

Ensure regular, adequate exercise

Feed a balanced, holistic, premium diet that is free of corn, wheat, soy preservatives and colorants

Take time out to have fun with your pet, it’s a great way to relieve stress

If your pet has accidents, remain patient.

Conventional Remedies:

Incontinence due to low levels of oestradiol is treated either with hormone supplements such as diethylstilboestrol (DES) or with drugs that act on the muscles of the urethral sphincter to improve tone and maximize urethral closure pressure. Both of these treatments are not without side effects with DES causing marked suppression of the bone marrow and the other drugs affecting the heart or causing hypertension, restlessness and anorexia.
