Homesickness in Dogs, Cats, Puppies, Kittens, Pets / Calming Aids for Separation Anxiety

Herbal nutrition to help reduce symptoms of homesickness, separation anxiety and general anxiety symptoms in dogs and cats.

Dogs and cats experience stress and disruptions in body systems, particularly affecting the Central and Autonomic Nervous systems (including the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems), requiring a nutritional correction to help restore emotional balance, to help promote relaxation, to help promote "rest and digest" instead of "fight or flight", to help promote feelings of comfort and security, while also supporting digestion during times of duress.

Many pet parents are surprised to learn that pet anxiety is a very common problem, representing one of the top reasons for veterinary visits. Pets get homesick, experience separation anxiety and stress just like people, and it can be just as damaging to your pet's health as yours.

Kittens, puppies and even adult dogs and cats may become homesick or anxious when they are initially separated from their mothers or brought into a new home. Remember what it was like for you to be separated from your mom and dad at a young age. It often resulted in crying, fear and a desire to be reunited with your parents. Especially for puppies and kittens, but even at any age, pets routinely (even daily) experience homesickness, separation anxiety, fear and stress.

Homesick and anxious pets may whimper, whine, lose their appetite, appear agitated and nervous and have diarrhea and/or become constipated from stress. Introducing a natural calming aid may not only help provide emotional relief but can also be used as a training tool to help your pet learn how to conquer homesickness, stress and anxiety.

Our pets can also experience serious anxiety when left alone for long periods of time, lack social contact, are confined to small spaces for long periods of time (even their kennel), experience boredom or are ill. Newly adopted dogs and cats introduced to a new home or are re-homed, attend daycare, board and kennel, visit their vet or groomer, or any new surroundings can trigger feelings of stress and anxiety. The result can turn the initial anxiety or homesickness experienced into a deeply internalized, traumatic event, with resulting long-term emotional and behavioral disruptions and problems.

Dogs and cats are intuitive and can detect and mimic our moods. It's important to create a loving, relaxing stress free environment, inside and outside of the home, especially when introducing a new dog or cat. Providing premium quality nutrition and fresh, clean, filtered water can also help in nourishing your pet's needs physically and biologically, which are directly linked to their overall emotional health.

Acknowledging these facts may help prevent anxiety-driven behavioral issues, allowing your pet to adjust to new surroundings. With untreated anxiety or long term exposure to stress, your pet can develop an anxiety disorder such as homesickness or pining every time your pet or you leave your home.

Helpful suggestions:

For kittens/puppies (or even newly adopted adult or senior dogs and cats) brought home for the first time, put a ticking clock near them that simulates their mother’s heartbeat and provide a comfy bed or box with extra blankets so that your pet can burrow and feel safe

Have a safe retreat box or spot in the house they can go to when they feel scared or threatened

A hot water bottle wrapped in a towel may help feel like their mother's body

Include a familiar toy or piece of clothing with their scent

Stay calm and happy to help reduce the stress your pet may detect

Be patient and remember how scary it can be to be young and/or in a new place
