Healing after Surgery

Healing & Recovery from Surgery

Natural remedies for cats and dogs to promote healing and shorten the recovery time after surgery.

Nutrition plays a major role in skin and bone health. Healthy skin and bones are a result of a well-functioning, synchronized effort by the immune system, tissues and organs in the body, to provide natural antibiotics, proteins, co-enzymes and trace minerals that provide skin support, help to maintain the skin’s ability to withstand and repair the effects of topical skin wounds, scars, burns, environmental exposure to toxins, antigens and microorganisms, bacterial and viral.

Healing after surgery is often a slow, gradual process for your dog or cat and generally depends on the type of operation, severity of the injury and overall health of your pet. Your pet may experience pain, have internal or external bruising, inflammation or tissue damage which affects reduces functioning and mobility.

The healing process involves the restoration and regeneration of connective tissue, nerve fibers and blood vessels which is essential to strengthen the immune system and avoid infection.

An animal’s skin is a wonderful example of regeneration. It is constantly shedding old skin and regenerating new skin cells. Bones, muscles and some nerve fibers can grow to repair themselves. Like a machine, the animal body can make minor repairs. All wounds heal using the same intrinsic process. There are three phases of wound healing: the inflammatory, fibroblastic, and maturation stages.

During this period your pet will require pet of rest, quiet, and good nutrition. Mostly, you will need to lavish your pet with lots of tender affection, love and attention. Make your pet as comfortable as possible by providing a safe, quiet sleeping environment with extra bedding for him to rest on.

Remember to follow strict instructions from your vet regarding dietary requirements, administering medications or changing dressings of wounds. Try to be patient, gentle and confident when handling your pet, and keep in mind that he cannot explain the extent of his discomfort or pain.

As a pet owner, you must determine how serious the wound it and whether a veterinarian needs to be called or you can address the wound at home.  When in doubt, contact your veterinarian.

If your animal presents these symptoms, contact your veterinarian immediately:

* showing signs of shock

* an animal bite (infection risk if very high)

* bleeding excessively, or if the bleeding will not stop

* a wound that requires stitches

* deep puncture wound, (chest and abdomen most critical)

* foreign matter in the wound

* wound is the result of an animal attack or being hit by a car

* if the wound does not heal after a few days

* any sign of a bacterial infection
