Fever in Dogs and Cats

Fever in Dogs and Cats / How to Reduce Fever in Dogs and Cats

Herbal nutrition for cats and dogs to help reduce high fevers and help restore body balance in dogs.

The immune system is a complex army of cells found through out your pet’s body that provides a fortified defense against unwanted invaders. It is an intricate, delicate system that keeps your pet healthy and protects them against allergens, viruses, bacteria, microbes, parasites, toxins, foreign cells and cellular mutations (healthy cells which have mutated into irregular cells).

The immune system is tasked with protecting EVERY cell in the animal body. A healthy immune system is tasked to support normal, balanced function and is not supposed to be suppressed or stimulated. But even an animal with a highly developed immune system can experience dysfunction or failure. In cases of dysfunction, an animal body requires whole body systemic support. If your pet’s immune system is weakened, every bodily system is at risk for disease.

Plant botanicals may help provide nutritional and biochemical support for healthy immune and cellular response, may help limit inflammation common to auto-immune disorders, as well as to enhance the growth of healthy cells and tissues in the body’s defense mechanism against viral, bacterial and microbial diseases.

Dogs and cats commonly experience symptoms of a fever, known as pyrexia, when an infection of inflammation is present in the animal body.

Your dog's normal temperature range is considered is at 101 F (38.0 C) and your cat's normal temperature range is at 102 F (38.5 C). A fever is typically associated with a temperature of 103.5 F (39.5 C) or higher.

A fever can be present as a result of several disruptions and/or changes, including a compromised immune system, a bacterial or viral infection, pneumonia, tick bites, dehydration, heat stroke, related to flu or a cold, a reaction to medications or vaccinations, or if your dog or cat has ingested toxic substances, such as a type of poison, or can be idiopathic in nature, meaning the origin is unknown.

Symptoms of fever may include:

Sneezing

Eye discharge

Nose discharge

Eye swelling

Flu-like symptoms

Vomiting

Difficulty breathing.

Mouth, tongue, lip and gum ulcers

Dehydration

Black stools

Loss of appetite

Loss of smell

Joint pain

Lethargy

Depression

Many pet parents believe that if their dog or cat’s nose is warm and dry, then a fever is present. The accurate way to confirm fever is by using a digital or glass rectal thermometer. Do not take your pet's temperature orally as a glass thermometer can break and cause a serious health risk.

Helpful suggestions to avoid fever or to help deal with a fever:

Feed your pet a holistic diet that contains essential vitamins, nutrients and minerals , free of corn, wheat, soy, inferior proteins, chemical additives and preservatives.

Provide fresh, clean, filtered water to hydrate and flush out toxins. Keep extra bowls of cold water around the house to encourage your pet to drink to remain hydrated.

Promote balanced immunity by adding immune-building supplements to your pet's diet.

Consider adding a natural remedy to help reduce your pet's immune health and to help counteract fever, including Shake Your Groove Thing, I Feel Good, Yummy Tummy or Soothed & Serene, depending on the symptoms presenting. Often the primary reason for a fever is difficult to isolate. In this regard, plant and marine based remedies can be favorable health options, supplying critical nutritional and biochemical layers of health supports in the form of primary and secondary natural plant chemicals. Natural plant chemicals can nutritionally deliver broad spectrum health supports which can help address the unknown in your pet's body. Herbs and marine remedies are often anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, anti-septic, anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, analgesic (pain reliever) and function as natural steroids in nature.

Maintain good sanitary measures by keeping food, water and bedding clean. Bowls and bedding can be a prime breeding ground for bacteria which can cause infection and lead to fever.

Avoid exposing your dog or cat to irritants and toxic substances such as household detergents, room or carpet fresheners, dryer sheets, cigarette smoke, fertilizers and pesticides, all of which can undermine immune health.

If you suspect your pet has a fever, confirm by taking your pet's temperature rectally. You may want to lubricate the thermometer with K-Y or petroleum jelly. Hold your pet's tail erect and gently insert the thermometer. You may need to secure your pet to reduce movement and reluctance.

Use caution when administering aspirin or aspirin like compounds to your dog. Aspirin and aspirin compounds can cause serious health problems for dogs and aspirin can be fatal for your cat. Do not administer aspirin or aspirin like compounds to cats under any circumstances. Aspirin can cause bleeding disorders in dogs, and can become an emergency situation for your dog. Consult your vet prior to giving your pet any type of aspirin.

Reduce fever by applying cold compresses or by bathing your pet in cool water for a short time. Limit the amount of time a cold compress is used or your pet is bathed in cold water as too much exposure to cold can have the opposite effect, intensifying and worsening a fever.

If your pet's fever increases or your pet becomes less responsive, see your vet immediately.

Visit your vet annually for wellness check ups.
