Dog Bites

Herbal treatments for bites and to provide wound care for bites caused by dogs and cats.

Animals routinely experience irregularities in bodily systems, including the Central and Autonomic Nervous systems, requiring a correction to restore emotional balance, to promote relaxation and reduce nervousness and to balance mood and provide feelings of comfort and security.

Many dogs experience emotional distress for a variety of reasons, including environmental and situational stressors such as the introduction of a new or young animal (puppy or kitten), the loss of a family member or pet, separation anxiety from owners, visiting guests, thunder or electrical storms, transitional or traumatic events, abuse, an inappropriate diet (one which contains processed foods including corn, wheat, soy or other fillers) and general anxiety that includes irregular behaviors manifest as urine marking, excessive barking, biting and scratching.

Dogs and cats of all breeds, size and age bite. They often get into fights with other dogs or cats when they are allowed to run loose and are not trained properly. While some animals have a more aggressive temperament than others, biting is essentially a way of showing dominance.

Many pet owners wait until biting becomes a serious problem; however, it is better to manage the situation early before habits develop.

Young puppies and kittens like to bite during play or when teething. If your pet is under six months, you should discourage biting. A puppy or kittens learns to stop biting from its mother or other members of the litter. When a young animal is taken away from the litter, he or she may use biting as a means to establish rank in a new environment. Socializing your puppy or kitten early is critical to prevent biting, aggression, fearfulness and other inappropriate behaviors.

Exposing your pet to new experiences, places, animals and sounds and taking him to obedience school will help to correct biting. Your dog needs to learn to obey commands, respect and trust you and know that you are now the leader of pack.

If a dog bites, complete the following steps:

  • Thoroughly wash the area with warm water. Then wash it again for five minutes with soap and water. Rinse the wound. Put gauze on for 24 hours.
  • Check the dog's vaccination record if possible (ask the owner). If not possible, the dog will have to be observed and checked.
  • Children should be instructed to stay away from strange animals. They should be supervised at all times.
  • It is recommended that you see a doctor in case you need stitches or other treatments.
