Demodectic Mange

Herbal treatments for symptoms related to demodectic mange.

Nutrition plays a major role in bone, teeth, skin and coat health and is the result of a well-functioning, synchronized effort by the immune systems and tissues and organs in the body. Plant botanicals support the process of free radical scavenging, the skin’s ability to withstand the effects of environmental exposure to toxins, antigens and microorganisms by maintaining proper liver, adrenal, immune, and intestinal function; protect the skin and connective tissues in the joints, reduce inflammation in the joints, acidify urine, improve immune function and build resistance to allergies.

Demodectic mange, also known as demodex, demodicosis or red mange, is caused by an over population of demodectic mites, a parasite which live in the hair follicles of our pets.

Demodectic mites are usually transmitted from mothers to their young in the first few weeks of life, and generally do not cause harm to your pet. When poor malnutrition, a weakened immune system, or intense stress disrupts the natural balance of the body, mites can reproduce rapidly and become out of control. Demodectic mange occurs mostly commonly in puppies with under-developed immune systems or senior and convalescing pets with suppressed immune systems.

Hair loss (alopecia) is usually the first symptom that is noticed. Hair loss usually begins on the head area, starting around the eyes and muzzle. The skin may appear red, crusty, and moist and the affected area will be sensitive to touch, skin may be itchy and cracked and the area may ooze.

Demodectic mange can be mild or very serious, resulting in fatality. Hair loss can spread over large areas of the body, lymph nodes can become swollen and skin can become inflamed, infected and painful to the touch. Secondary infections can develop quickly, accompanied by fever, lethargy and appetite loss.

Corticosteroids or other immune-suppressing drugs have also been implicated as a possible cause for demodectic mange.

Demodectic mange may be activated by a variety of illnesses including Cushing’s disease, hypothyroidism, cancer, and heartworm disease in dogs, or Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV), and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) in cats.

Conventional Remedies:

Your vet will likely conduct a skin scraping or biopsy before an accurate diagnosis can be made.

Since mange is typically related to a compromised immune system, the underlying cause of the immune suppression or deficiency must be treated in conjunction with the treatment for mange. Conventional treatments of mange are usually in the form of chemical based lotions, dips and shampoos.

Many of these treatments contain chemicals such as benzyl peroxide, amitraz and ivermectin, however, it must be noted that these chemicals can be very harsh and cause a number of unwanted side effects. In cases where demodectic mange is severe or generalized over large areas of the body, antibiotics are often prescribed to guard against serious infection. Antibiotics weaken the immune system.
