Burns

Herbal remedies that can help prevent to infection, soothe skin and promote skin repair related to burns in dogs and cats.

Nutrition plays a major role in skin and bone health. Healthy skin and bones are a result of a well-functioning, synchronized effort by the immune system, tissues and organs in the body. Natural supplements contain natural antibiotics, proteins, co-enzymes and trace minerals that provide skin support, help to maintain the skin’s ability to withstand and repair the effects of topical skin wounds, scars, burns, environmental exposure to toxins, antigens and microorganisms, bacterial and viral.

Hot weather can be hazardous for your dogs or cats. Some primary areas of concern include:

1. Burnt pads: Many pet owners do not give consideration to the pain and injuries that can result from walking their dogs or cats on the sidewalk or other heated surfaces. If humans are unable to walk barefoot on a hot, sandy beach in mid-summer due to surface temperatures, the same applies to dogs and cats, whose pads can become scalded on asphalt.

2. Skin cancer: Pets get skin cancer readily as a result of UV radiation. Though most cancers of the skin are unrelated to the sun’s rays, a large percentage of white or light-colored sunbathers, especially in more tropical latitudes, suffer solar-related skin cancers.

3. Pool hazards and other drowning possibilities: Like people, animals are at risk for drowning. At risk animals or those who are debilitated, suffer from vision problems or seizure disorders, animals that cannot swim, and animals in unfamiliar environments can all drown easily.

4. Sunburn: Apart from being uncomfortable, skin cancer is a risk. Pets also require sunscreen 30 SPF (or greater), and select one recommended by a veterinary dermatologist. Ears, the bridge of the nose and other areas where hair and coat are thin can all be affected by sunburn, and potentially cancer.

5. Sun block T-shirts: Sun block t-shirts can be effective at protecting dogs and cats from over exposure to the sun as well as function as an alternative to sunscreen.

6. Too hot for anyone: Just as people should avoid sun during peak hours, so should animals. The risk of heat stroke is most likely at those times.

7. Water on hand at all times: Water should always be available for dogs and cats, in all places and at all times. Have access to hoses, water fountains and other water sources. Cars are particularly a dangerous environment for dogs and cats, so even in cases where water is present, dogs and cats can die in locked, closed cars.

8. Heat exhaustion: Bright red gums, tongue and eyes, excessive panting, sudden exercise intolerance can all be signs of heat exhaustion. Pay attention to your dog or cats present state. Do not push your animal to walk on hot days, which can produce obvious signs of heat exhaustion (mild to moderate hyperthermia).

9. Heat stroke: A condition in which an animal’s body temperature has climbed into the 105-and-above range (severe hyperthermia).

10. Protect your pets indoors: Heat stroke can happen indoors, too. On extra-hot days our homes can turn into ovens, in the event the A/C goes out or due to power loss. Always keep a fan trained on the crate and a generator or a spare AC wall unit set on low in the room where the crate is placed.

Here is what you do if you suspect your pet is exposed to excessive heat:

* Remove the pet from the environment where the hyperthermia occurred.

* Move the pet to the shade and direct a fan on him.

* If possible, determine rectal temperature and record.

* Begin to cool the body by wetting with cool (not cold) water on the trunk and legs. It is helpful to use rubbing alcohol on the skin of the stomach and allow the fan to speed evaporation.

* Transport to a veterinary facility.

DO NOT DO THE FOLLOWING:

* Do not use cold water or ice for cooling.

* Do not overcool the pet.

* Do not attempt to force water orally.

* Do not leave the pet unattended for any length of time.”
