Bruises

Bruises (Contusions)

Herbal treatments to reduce swelling and inflammation in areas such as the paws, legs and ears of cats and dogs.

Nutrition plays a major role in skin health. Healthy skin is a result of a well-functioning, synchronized effort by tissues and organs in the body. Skin health requires nutrients that help to support proper liver, adrenal, immune, and intestinal function and maintain the skin's ability to withstand the effects of environmental exposure to toxins, antigens, and microorganisms.

Bruises are injuries to soft tissue and generally occur beneath unbroken skin, also known as a contusion or ecchymosis. Bruises occur when small blood vessels or muscle fibers under the skin tear or rupture, most often from a bump, collision, twist, fall or even medications. Upon impact, blood leaks into tissues under the skin and causes a tender bump to form, usually black-and-blue in color that will change over time, from purplish black, reddish blue, to yellowish green as the bruise heals and will typically go away within 2 to 4 weeks.

You will need to change the bandages every day until the wound heals and keep them from getting wet. If you notice an unpleasant smell coming from the bandages when you change them, contact your vet immediately. When dealing with minor injuries, a small film of triple antibiotic ointment can be applied to the affected area two to three times a day. Do not, however, apply a large amount of ointment on the area, as your dog may be tempted to lick it.

The areas of the animal body that are most commonly affected by swelling of tissues include the paws, legs, limbs, joints, skin, lymph glands, and internal organs. Inflammation is generally not cause for major concern and often occurs in warmer weather or as a result of superficial wounds in the form of small cuts and scrapes. If swelling occurs throughout the animal body, this may be a sign of a long-term, progressive disease.

General inflammation may occur as a result of any injury in the animal body, or an allergy. It can also be caused by scrapes, cuts, burns, abrasions and bruising. A variety of factors and medical conditions can cause swelling and these including malnutrition, pregnancy or as a result of surgical procedures.

Note: If a joint or paw is bruised and swollen, please assume the injury is deeper and consult a veterinarian immediately.
