Bathing

Herbal remedies that help support healthy skin and coat.

Nutrition plays a major role in skin and bone health. Healthy skin and bones are a result of a well-functioning, synchronized effort by the immune system, tissues and organs in the body. The immune system is a complex array of cells that are found throughout the body. Immune cells are designed to function in conjunction with one another to provide a fortified defense against unwanted invaders, such as allergens, fleas or ticks.

Bathing your pet does not have to be stressful. Most animals are fairly obedient when being bathed. Shampooing your pet regularly is an important component in maintaining your animal’s health, including controlling skin problems such as itchy skin, dandruff, fleas and ticks, etc.

The most important thing to considering in getting your pet to like or at least tolerate a bath is to make the experience less frightening and stressful and more enjoyable.

Here are some reasons why your pet does not like taking a bath and what you can do:

Reasons

What You Can Do

They were not properly introduced to the idea of bathing

Re-educate your pet. Make bathing an attractive experience, such as reinforcing every action with delicious treats.

They do not like the slippery bathtub floor

Put a bath mat in the tub.

Wash the dog on a non-skid floor.

They do not like soap in their eyes

Wash the face with a washcloth.

Use a tearless shampoo on the face.

They do not like water in their ears

Place cotton balls in the ears to keep out water.

Use a washcloth to wash around the outside of the ears.

They do not like cold water

Use warm running water indoors.

Use a small pool (kid's pool) filled with water warmed by the sun outdoors.

They do not like the high-pitched sound of the hairdryer

Use a quiet dryer, or do not use a dryer at all.

They do not like the combing after the bath because the hair is tangled

Remove mats and tangles before bathing or use a detangler specifically formatted for dogs and cats. Thoroughly comb and brush the dog's hair and clip out matted hair.

Other suggestions:

If you have a young dog full of energy or a high-strung dog, exercise your dog before giving him a bath to tire him out.

Wet the hair around the neck and apply shampoo to the neck first, then proceed to do the same all the way to the tail. If you start from the neck, fleas cannot jump from the body to the head.

Use an all-natural shampoo: Many pet shampoos are harsh and may be irritating to your pet’s skin. Be sure to purchase your shampoo at an independent retailer that carries only all-natural, herbal based shampoo products. Some pet owners think that bathing makes an animal’s skin dry and flaky. What typically makes skin and coat itchy is failure to remove shampoo or using the wrong type of shampoo.

Bathing is a very good skin therapy for dogs with itchy and inflamed skin because when bathing and rinsing the coat, you are manually removing toxins and allergens from your dog's skin.

For dogs with skin allergies or with greasy coats, veterinarians suggest that frequent bathing is beneficial, as often as twice a week.

Choose a natural and gentle dog shampoo that best meets the needs of your dog's skin conditions, does not contain Sodium Laurel Sulfate, DEET, pyrethrins or synthetic pesticides and chemicals that are harmful to your pet.

Choose a shampoo that contains aloe vera, herbal oils, neem (it must be diluted according to body weight or it can be toxic) and colloidal oatmeal to soothe irritated and dry skin for pets who suffer from dandruff, hot spots or inflammation.

Once you apply shampoo, keep the shampoo on for at least 10 minutes to fully remove dead skin coat, and excess hair. Do not use shampoos for people on your pets.

While applying shampoo, gently massage the skin and coat and leave on for 10 minutes. Pay particular attention to the armpits, belly, all the way down the legs, and the paws and toes.

While your pet soaks, use a soft washcloth to clean the face and ears.

Rinse thoroughly. If you don't rinse off all the shampoo, your pet’ skin will become dry, itchy and uncomfortable.

Drying: If you have a dog or cat that has long hair, you definitely need more than one drying towel. If you choose to use a blow dryer, use it on the lowest setting and keep moving the blow dryer around to avoid irritating or burning any particular area of the skin.
