Herbal remedies to help address symptomatic needs related to pyoderma based skin wounds and bacterial infections.

The immune system is a complex army of cells found through out your pet’s body that provides a fortified defense against unwanted invaders. It is an intricate system that keeps your pet healthy and protects them against allergens, viruses, bacteria, microbes, parasites, toxins, foreign fells and cellular mutations (healthy cells which have mutated into irregular cells). The immune system is tasked with protecting EVERY cell in the animal body.

A healthy immune system is resilient and powerful and up to the task of supporting normal, balanced function. The immune system is not intended to be suppressed or stimulated.  But even an animal with a highly developed immune system can experience dysfunction or failure. In cases of dysfunction, an animal body requires whole body systemic support. If your pet’s immune system is weakened, every bodily system is at risk for disease.

Pyoderma is a bacterial skin infection that occurs when trauma or damage breaks open surface skin. Once surface skin is exposed, it can become susceptible to moisture, suffer limited blood flow to the wound area, and can spread due to your pet constantly licking the area, causing further damage and infection.

as been broken, the skin has become injured due to chronic exposure to moisture, the normal skin bacteria have been altered or changed, the blood flow to the skin has become impaired or the immune system has been suppressed. Pyoderma is often secondary to allergic dermatitis and develops in the abrasions on the skin's surface that occur as a result of scratching.

Pyoderma can be the result of allergic dermatitis  or parasites (mites, fleas) as your pet continually licks, chews or scratches the affected area, causing open sores and abrasions, allowing bacteria to penetrate the lesions.

Pyoderma manifests with pustules that form on the skin and look similar to pimples. They are usually raised, red areas that contain white pus. Pyoderma can also present in round crusty skin, dry flaky skin, alopecia (hair loss), may look like hives and caused constant itching.

Pets suffering from deep pyoderma may be anorexic, lethargic, weak, depressed, and have a fever.

The best defense against pyroderma and other bacterial infections is to feed a holistic, wholesome, natural diet, including raw, home cooked or grain-free diet to help build a strong immune system and resistance to disorders.

There are three types of pyoderma:

Surface Pyodermas

Infections that occur on the surface of the skin, such as hot spots or skin folds and are usually located in areas that are hard to clean and keep dry and ideal for harboring bacteria.

Superficial Pyodermas

Infections that occur within the skin, usually caused by bacteria such as Staphylococcus intermedius. This type of pyoderma can be primary with no underlying root cause, or secondary, caused by an underlying cause. Secondary pyodermas can be caused by a weakened immune system.

Deep Pyodermas

Deep pyodermas are uncommon and are bacterial infections that occur under the skin. Animals with deep pyodermas all tend to have a compromised immune system, more than one infection and are systemically sick.

Conventional Treatment:

Your vet will likely perform the following to diagnose and treat pyoderma: collect skin scrapings to detect the presence of mites, check for parasites and fleas, fungal culture, wood’s lamps examination for ringworm and obtain a bacterial culture.

Conventional treatment involves the use of antibiotics, topical therapy, and when appropriate, treatment of the underlying causes.

The bacteria causing pyoderma and deep pryodermas in dogs (Staphylococcus intermedius) does not respond to some of the more common antibiotics such as penicillin, or tetracycline, therefore, more potent antibiotics (e.g. cephalexin) will likely be prescribed. Topically, special antibacterial shampoos that contain benzoyl peroxide, sulfur, ethyl lactate, chlorhexidine, or tar may be used.
