The immune system is a complex array of cells that are found throughout the body, designed to function in conjunction with one another to provide a fortified defense against foreign invaders. The immune system also helps build a nutritional defense and is tasked with normal function and is not intended to be suppressed or stimulated. In cases of imbalance, whole body systemic support is required.

An allergic reaction occurs when your pet’s body develops a hypersensitive response to a foreign substance or material. Allergic responses can be generated by anything your animal interacts with and isolating/diagnosing the allergen trigger can be difficult.

Food is usually a primary reasons our pets experience allergies. Other foreign substances can include flea saliva (often causing allergic reaction such as flea bite dermatitis), pollen (causing allergies in spring) or other environmental allergens (dryer sheets, carpet freshener), vaccinations (which can cause vaccinosis), insect bites and stings.

All of these substances are considered to be allergens or allergic triggers. When you pet’s body senses an allergenic invader, it sounds “distress” alarms, which prompts the immune system to produce antibodies called immunoglobulin E. Next, these antibodies cause mast cells to release chemicals, like histamine, into the animal’s bloodstream against the allergens.

Fleas are the common culprit when it comes to allergies in pets. Use a flea repellant recommended by your vet. Remember that flea collars and flea powders are not suitable for cats, as they groom themselves by licking. Flea dips can also be very toxic and do not last long enough for really good flea control.

Pets can be allergic to pollen, mold, dust mites and mildew. Keep all surfaces clean, vacuum rugs and wash pet linen regularly.

If your pet's allergies seem to be seasonal, spend limited time outdoors during allergy season. After taking your animal outdoors to play, it is important to brush them down (gently, but firmly) to remove pollen particles. Air filters can also be fitted in the home.

Sometimes a pet's immune system may develop an allergic reaction to some part of its diet. You can try limit certain foods and keep track of improvements to identify the trigger.

Pets also suffer with contact allergies, (caused by grasses, floor polish, washing detergents and wool rugs). Contact allergies are easily identifiable as they are usually limited to a specific area of an animal's body. The allergen is also usually not hard to find.

Allergies can also aggravate other conditions for an animal such as sinusitis, bronchitis, ear infections, seborrhea, eczema, other dermal rashes and asthma. The combination of symptoms makes it difficult to identify the allergen trigger. Additionally, allergy-related symptoms such as fatigue, lethargy, loss of appetite, itching, scratching, biting and other forms of distress may cause your pet much discomfort.

A dog or cat showing signs of an allergic reaction may bite, itch, scratch, lick skin red or raw, have visible tenderness and redness to the skin, experience inflammation, skin will be hot to the touch, your dog or cat may experience vomiting, diarrhea or difficulty breathing. If your pet is showing any signs, see your vet immediately.

Animals are commonly prescribed antibiotics as allergy symptoms return. Long term steroid treatments address symptoms but do not address the underlying cause for allergic reactions. Repeated use of corticosteroids can suppress an animal’s immune system, making it susceptible to other diseases as well as at risk of developing more allergies.

Steroids are the number one prescribed drug by veterinarians to treat all forms of animal allergies, however, have many associated side effects, including weight gain, increased thirst, increased urination, aggression, compromised immunity and can stress the liver and kidneys.

If superficial skin allergies are related to fleas, ticks or other insect bites, topical treatments may help reduce symptoms. Synthetic medications suppress the immune system and antihistamines may be accompanied by side effects.
