Abrasions

Abrasions

Herbal healing treatments for cats and dogs to help care for abrasions such as cuts and scratches.

Nutrition plays a major role in skin and bone health. Healthy skin and bones are a result of a well-functioning, synchronized effort by the immune system, tissues and organs in the body to provide natural antibiotics, proteins, co-enzymes and trace minerals that provide skin support, help to maintain the skin’s ability to withstand and repair the effects of topical skin abrasions, wounds, scars, burns, environmental exposure to toxins, antigens and microorganisms, including bacterial, fungal and viral in nature.

Abrasions are defined as superficial damage to the skin, also called scrapes or grazes. An abrasion may bleed, but is typically less severe than a laceration and should not cause scarring. It's important to quickly assess the severity of any wound.

Although more common to rough and tumble kittens and puppies and active dogs and cats, sedentary dogs and cats can also sustain a number of cuts, scrapes, bites and abrasions over their lifetime. As a pet owner, you must determine how serious the wound it and whether a veterinarian needs to be called or you can address the wound at home.  When in doubt, contact your veterinarian.

An animal’s skin has amazing regenerative abilities and is constantly shedding old skin, regenerating new skin cells and making new repairs both on and under the skin's surface. Bones, muscles and some nerve fibers can grow to repair themselves.

There are three phases of healing: inflammatory, fibroblastic, and maturation stages.

With a simple laceration or cut, inflammation begins after injury and the wound site swells as the biochemical ingredients needed for healing gather, which include leukocytes and monocytes fibrinogen, histamine, prostaglandins, and vasoactive substances.

The inflammatory response is intricate and required to prepare the wound for the succeeding phases of healing. Please be aware, that conventional drugs that limit inflammation such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAID’s) will slow the natural healing process of a wound.

Second, fibroblasts begin to proliferate and position themselves for collagen synthesis. As collagen content increases, the wound site strengthens.

The third and final stage of wound healing lasts the longest. This maturation, or remodeling phase, may continue for weeks or several years (depending on the severity of the injury), with gradual improvements in wound appearance.

If your animal presents these symptoms, contact your veterinarian immediately:

Showing signs of shock

Sustains an animal bite (infection risk if very high)

Is bleeding excessively

Bleeding will not stop

Wound requires stitches

Deep puncture wound, (chest and abdomen most critical)

Foreign particles in the wound

Wound is the result of an animal attack

Wound is the result of being hit by a car

Wound does not heal after a few days

ANY SIGN OF BACTERIAL INFECTION

If your animal is healthy, is not immuno- compromised or geriatric, most abrasions and superficial wounds can be treated at home by thoroughly washing the wound with soap that is specifically formulated for dogs and cats. After cleaning, dry the area with a clean, soft cotton cloth.

Use a natural, organic product specifically formulated for pets to lessen the discomfort and pain associated with an abrasion. Natural products help soothe the skin, aid in healing and reduce the risk of infection and scarring.
