FUS / Feline Urologic Syndrome / FLUTD

Herbal remedies to help treat lower urinary tract disorders, kidney and bladder stones, bladder inflammation, urinary blockage, cystitis (inflammation of the bladder) in cats.

In renal challenges, the kidneys not only need to be supported but consideration should also be given to support of the liver, cardiovascular system and autonomic nervous system., facilitate the support and natural rehabilitation of the kidneys and other important tissues.

FUS is a broad term that includes conditions affecting the feline lower urinary system and bladder, including urolithiasis (stones in the urinary tract), cystitis (inflammation of the bladder) and urethral obstruction.

FUS is a common disease in adult cats, with 1 in 3 domestic cats affected during their lifetime. FUS affects both male and female cats, but tends to be more dangerous in males than females due to their longer, narrower urethra and greater susceptibility to blockage.

A variety of symptoms may present in FUS, including:

blood in the urine (hematuria)

frequent urination (pollakiuria)

straining during attempts to urinate (dysuria)

formation of urinary crystals and stones in the bladder (crystalluria / urolithiasis)

prolonged squatting

painful urination

small amounts of urination

licking at the urinary opening

urinating outside of the litter box or in the house

partial or total obstruction of the urethra (aka plugged-penis syndrome and blocked cat syndrome)

behavioral changes

Complete urethral obstruction is fatal if left untreated and is a true medical emergency. Urinary tract disorders have a high rate of recurrence, and some cats seem to be more susceptible to urinary problems than dogs. Once chronic urinary tract infections occur, a predisposition is established, creating a vicious cycle.

A cat experiencing a urethral obstruction behaves similarly to any other cat with FUS. Over time, the bladder fills up with urine and cause painful bladder distension. Kidney failure and uremia (excessive waste in blood that the kidneys can't eliminate) can follow within hours.

The cat becomes increasingly distressed, and may howl or cry out in pain. The male cat may constantly lick at his genitals and the penis may be protruded. The cat may seek seclusion, stop eating and drinking, begin to vomit, and become lethargic and eventually comatose as toxins accumulate in the bloodstream.

Other suggestions:

Never punish your pet for accidents. There is always an underlying cause, even if it is poor house training.

When pets are ill or have a bladder infection, they may urinate in unusual places to get your attention.

If your pet’s bladder control issues are related to house training, remember to use plenty of positive reinforcement and rewards for the correct behavior, rather than punishment for the wrong behavior.

When loss of bladder control occurs during stress, excitement or as a submissive behavior, reduce environmental stress to allow your pet to relax. Don't over react.

Reduced bladder control is a common symptom in aging pets, or those suffering from Alzheimer’s. Increase your pet's bathroom breaks. Reward your pet when they urinate outside. Add extra litter boxes around the house.

Like humans, older pets can be embarrassed and confused about accidents or may not be aware they are occurring. Do not berate your pet for something they likely can't control.
