Toxocara Canis in Dogs and Cats / Roundworm

Herbal treatments to help de-worm and to help eliminate stomach bloating due to round worm infestation in dogs and cats.

The immune system is a complex army of cells found through out your pet’s body that provides a fortified defense against unwanted invaders. It is an intricate system that keeps your pet healthy and protects them against allergens, viruses, bacteria, microbes, parasites, toxins, foreign fells and cellular mutations (healthy cells which have mutated into irregular cells). The immune system is tasked with protecting EVERY cell in the animal body. With so many pet parents wondering why and how to best support immunity in their dogs and cats, this article will highlight its role and provide practical suggestions.

A healthy immune system is resilient and powerful and up to the task of supporting normal, balanced function. The immune system is not intended to be suppressed or stimulated.  But even an animal with a highly developed immune system can experience dysfunction or failure. In cases of dysfunction, an animal body requires whole body systemic support. If your pet’s immune system is weakened, every bodily system is at risk for disease. .

Roundworms are common intestinal parasites that affect both cats and dogs. Most puppies and kittens are infected with roundworms at birth or within the first few months of life as the worms are often transmitted in the uterus or while nursing from their mothers.

Roundworms are cylindrical, cream colored worms that can grow as long as seven inches and can cause a number of symptoms for your pet such as vomiting, diarrhea, reduced nutrition and swollen bellies that are common to infected puppies and kittens.

Female roundworms can produce up to  staggering 100,000 eggs in a single day. The eggs are passed in the stool. It takes about a month for the egg to become infected and can remain infectious for almost a year. Your dog or cat can acquire the egg through eating something infected with roundworms or through grooming, referred to as Phase 1 of infection.

Once your pet ingests the roundworm, he/she become a host to the egg, allowing the roundworm egg to invade surrounding tissue. This is the second phase of roundworm development. Once it embeds in tissue such as the lungs, it begins the third phase, known as the larva stage.

In the third stage, the larva embed into tissue in the throat. Animals cough them up, commonly swallow them again, allowing the eggs to hatch into worms in the intestines and surrounding soft tissue. Once the mature worms are back in the intestines, they begin to mate, shed eggs and the cycle of infection begins again.

Other suggestions:

Because it is not always possible to know when your pets have been exposed to infected roundworm larvae, check your pet regularly for infestation. An indoor cat is low risk and may only need treatment once a year, where a dog that if outdoors often and interacts with other dogs may need treatment every three months.

Roundworm larvae can be transmitted to humans and can cause damage to body tissue. Washing your hands after handling pets and cleaning litter boxes and outdoor waste are good preventatives.

Prevent your pet from interacting with other animal’s feces and rodents to help avoid infection. If your cat or dog hunts, your pet may be at great risk of infection.
