Pet supplements for immune system disorders.Immune System Disorders

Herbal remedies to promote immunity and to help reduce immune system disorders in dogs and cats.

The immune system is a complex array of cells that are found throughout your pet’s body. Immune cells are designed to function in conjunction with one another to provide a fortified defense against unwanted invaders. It is an intricate system that keeps your pet healthy and protects them against all sorts of invaders including allergens, viruses, bacteria, microbes, parasites and toxins.

The immune system is also directed at facilitating normal. balanced function and is not intended to be suppressed or stimulated. In cases of dysfunction, an animal body requires whole body systemic support. If your pet’s immune system is weakened, every bodily system is at risk.

Autoimmune disease in dogs and cats occur when one or more components of the immune system becomes overactive and the immune system is no longer able to identify the attack as belonging to the pet’s own body or a foreign invader.

While an animal’s skin is an obvious physical barrier to germs and toxins, your pet’s body contains many lines of defense against unwanted invader, including special immune cells that are activated. When your animal’s immune system is triggered, it sends an alarm related to the foreign material, such as a reaction to fleas, pollen, chemicals or other materials.

Your pet naturally secretes antibacterial substances that hinder the growth of excess bacteria on the skin. An animal’s eyes, nose and mouth are all possible points of entry for invading germs, but your pet’s tears, nasal discharge and saliva also all contain enzymes or cells related to the immune system to keep the invaders away.

The mucous membrane linings of the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and genitourinary tracts are other areas that provide a first line of defense against invasion by microbes or parasites. Internal immune defense mechanisms for an animal include the lymphatic system, the thymus gland, bone marrow, spleen and white blood cells and antibodies.

The immune system is amazingly resilient and powerful, providing an invisible and ongoing protection against viruses, bacteria, foreign cells and an animal’s own body, in cases when healthy cells have mutated into irregular cells, such as in the presence of cancer cells. But even a highly developed immune system can experience dysfunction or failure.

Many animals suffer from allergies that are caused by a hypersensitive reaction of the immune system to environmental allergens. When these antigens enter the animal’s body, the immune system tends to over react and the antibodies quickly create a histamine response, which results in an allergic reaction.

These reactions differ in severity and may include itchiness, lesions, blocked sinus, asthma, eczema, hot spots and contact dermatitis. When cells of the immune system over-produce and are imbalanced, auto immune diseases such as arthritis or cancer present. A human example is when an over production of white blood cells occurs, leukemia results.

Frequently, conventional veterinarians will recommend antibiotics, glucosteroids or corticosteroids. However, with an animal struggling with a compromised immune system, these medications can add an extra layer of burden to a system already unable to repair itself. And antibiotics are not effective against viruses and should not be given to a pet for a viral infection.

Antibiotics and steroids have been used excessively and improperly for pets, and do no address the underlying cause of disease. The more your pet is given synthetic drugs, the more depressed their immune systems become, and the more susceptible they become to disease and infection, creating a vicious cycle of drug use, which further compromises immunity. The end result typically prevents in serious, and sometimes, fatal diseases and conditions.

Primary immunodeficiency disorders involve weakened immune response when required. Primary immunodeficiency disorders are seen due to heritable defects in the immune system, whereas secondary immunodeficiency disorders are caused by some other primary disease.

Breeds predisposed to primary immunodeficiency disorders include basset hounds, Cardigan Welsh corgis, Jack Russell terriers, Beagles, German shepherds, Chinese sharpies, Doberman pinschers, dwarfed Weimaraners, gray collies, and Irish setters.

Symptoms include:

Prone to recurrent infections

Failed response to conventional antibiotic therapies

Lethargy

Lack of appetite (anorexia)

Various skin infections

Poor growth (hallmark)

Post vaccination diseases

Other symptoms related to infections

Immunodeficiency disorders are a congenital disorder; i.e., dogs are born with them

You can do a lot to boost immunity. A strong, healthy immune system is the best protection to prevent disease. Lifestyle factors can also either help to keep the immune system in peak condition and able to ward off recurrent infections or tax immunity, making your pet susceptible to disease.

Conventional Remedies:

Antibiotics and steroid medications may be recommended for dogs and cats with struggling immune systems. Additionally, Omega 3 fish oils may be recommended, as well as a balanced, holistic diet and exercise.

Be aware that antibiotic, glucosteroids and corticosteroids seriously compromise immune health, have serious side effects and are unable to address the underlying cause for immune disorders and failure. Once a steroid therapy is stopped, all symptoms of disease or disorder will return. If long term steroid therapy is stopped abruptly, adrenal failure can occur in dogs and cats and can be fatal.
